Last week, I attended a fantastic #WebAccessibility training with WebAIM in collaboration with the #UniversityofUtah Web Community of Practice. As an interdisciplinary educator and leader, it's crucial to approach web development with the same care and intention brought to methods design or curriculum. Improving user experience toward #UniversalDesign means larger audiences can engage with critical health and wellness information - and becoming WCAG compliant is the first step! From the training: "The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide an international set of guidelines. They are developed by the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C), the governing body of the web. These guidelines, the basis of most web accessibility laws in the world, are based on four principles: ~ Perceivable: Available to the senses (vision and hearing primarily) either through the browser or through assistive technologies (e.g. screen readers, screen enlargers, etc.) ~ Operable: Users can interact with all controls and interactive elements using either the mouse, keyboard, or an assistive device. ~ Understandable: Content is clear and limits confusion and ambiguity. ~ Robust: A wide range of technologies (including old and new user agents and assistive technologies) can access the content." Some of the key resources I gained from this #training include: - Web AIM's WCAG checklist: assess where a website measures up federal and state requirements across the four key principles of web accessibility https://lnkd.in/gWWAKcaa - Contrast checking tool: ensure that foreground and background assets are visible for a greater population by plugging hex codes into this handy calculator to ensure WCAG compliance - Web AIM's Evaluation guide (WAVE): a free browser extension that gives accessibility info including WCAG errors, likely alerts, and passing features https://wave.webaim.org/

The latest WCAG2ICT is out today! This new version incorporates WCAG 2.1 and 2.2, and adds a few new terms (closed functionality, menu-driven interface, platform software and virtual keyboard). WCAG2ICT explains how to use WCAG, a standard for web content, for things that aren't web content, like closed functionality. (Note: WCAG itself is normative, WCAG2ICT is not)
