The increasing demand for safer and more efficient transportation solutions, coupled with advancements in technology, are drivers of this market. 📈 Working in this segment, German teledriving technology startup Vay is the only company in Europe to operate on public roads without a safety driver. Developing automotive-grade technology for remote driving, the company has landed €34 million in funding led by the European Investment Bank (EIB). Wayve's HUGE $1bn raise positions the company as a clear frontrunner in Europe's autonomous vehicles sector — but there's one big question that all AV startups are currently under pressure to answer: how will you make money? For Wayve's part, while it's been reported that the company is in talks with car makers, it hasn't announced any revenue generating deals yet. And it's still early days in terms of commercialising for several other startups in the sector. “For every AV company in Europe (and the world), there is a big sense of urgency to start generating revenues,” said Hendrik Kramer, founder of FERNRIDE. “In the next couple of years, we will see that there will be winners and losers in the industry.” So, where are startups going to fall in those two camps? 💭 Meet Qasar Younis: The Pakistani-born founder that raised a $250M Series E at a $6B valuation for his AI-powered autonomous driving startup: Applied Intuition 🤖 Applied Intuition was founded in 2017 by Qasar Younis and Peter Ludwig with the mission to enable the emergence of a safe and intelligent machine ecosystem. 🚘 The startup provides software tools for developing autonomous driving and Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) to some of the biggest automakers in the world. 📈 They’ve even recently launched an off-road autonomy solution to enable safe navigation of bad terrain, a Gen-AI tool that creates simulation scenarios up to 40x faster. 🏎️ So far, the startup has managed to work with 18 of the top 20 automakers including GM, Toyota, and Volkswagen for development purposes. 💸 Applied Intuition is now profitable (super rare for AI companies nowadays), and has achieved triple-digit percentage growth year over year. 💰 In March 2024, Applied Intuition raised $250M at a $6B valuation led by Lux Capital, Elad Gil and Porsche Investments Management with participation from Reid Hoffman, Ray Dalio, and General Catalyst among many others. 💴 In July 2024, they raised a further $300M, bringing their total raised to over $900M. 🚀 Peter Ludwig says at this point it’s “dangerous for an automaker not to partner with us in some ways because of the sheer complexity and impact of some of the tech we’re working on”... A new crop of early-stage startups — along with some recent VC investments — illustrates a niche emerging in the autonomous vehicle technology sector. Unlike the companies bringing robotaxis to city streets, these startups are taking their tech off-road. Two recent entrants — Seattle-based Overland AI and New Brunswick-based Potential — are poised to get a first-mover advantage on this segment of autonomy.
