Wayve's HUGE $1bn raise positions the company as a clear frontrunner in Europe's autonomous vehicles sector — but there's one big question that all AV startups are currently under pressure to answer: how will you make money? For Wayve's part, while it's been reported that the company is in talks with car makers, it hasn't announced any revenue generating deals yet. And it's still early days in terms of commercialising for several other startups in the sector. “For every AV company in Europe (and the world), there is a big sense of urgency to start generating revenues,” said Hendrik Kramer, founder of FERNRIDE. “In the next couple of years, we will see that there will be winners and losers in the industry.” So, where are startups going to fall in those two camps? I dug into the promise of AV tech — and the pressures to commercialise — here: https://lnkd.in/ePXDtGyw

Good news for Autonomous Driving from the UK! The fact that AI-based self-driving companies are able to raise more than a billion dollars in capital proves that investors are ready to back the right technology. I hope that the money is used wisely and one good use for the money would be to prove that the technology is free of unreasonable risk, avoids technological insufficiencies and foreseeable misuse and is protected against deliberate cyber-attacks. "British self-driving technology startup Wayve said on Tuesday it has raised $1.05 billion in a funding round led by SoftBank Group (9984.T), opens new tab to accelerate the development and launch in production-model vehicles of its Embodied AI technology that can learn from and adapt to human behavior. ..." Autonomous technology startup Waabi has closed on a $200 million Series B round, led by existing investors Uber and Khosla Ventures. Strong strategic investors include NVIDIA, Volvo Group Venture Capital, Porsche Automobil Holding SE, Scania Invest and Ingka Investments. The round brings Waabi’s total funding to $283.5 million. Unlike Tesla's approach, The Waabi Driver has done most of its training, testing and validation using a closed-loop simulator called Waabi World that automatically builds digital twins of the world from data; performs real-time sensor simulation; manufactures scenarios to stress test the Waabi Driver; and teaches the Driver to learn from its mistakes without human intervention. In just four years, that simulator has helped Waabi launch commercial pilots (with a human driver in the front seat) in Texas, many of which are happening through a partnership with Uber Freight. Waabi World is also enabling the startup to reach its planned commercial fully driverless launch in 2025. https://lnkd.in/esqBZHMv

Exclusive: Doubts over autonomous vehicle startup’s £500m funding as staff go unpaid. ❗️ Once hailed as a promising UK autonomous vehicle startup, Conigital Group captured the attention of the European tech scene last year when it announced it had secured a “landmark” £500m funding offer. The Birmingham-based company’s ‘megaround’ ranked as one of the largest European funding deals in 2023. It was also the largest ever investment into a UK autonomous vehicle startup, until rival Wayve’s $1bn round last month. However, a UKTN investigation can reveal that the £500m funding round has not closed – and raises significant questions. Our investigation can instead reveal that Conigital Group has failed to pay UK employees on time since May 2023 and is now facing around a dozen employment tribunals over owed wages. In a statement, Conigital said: “Conigital Ltd. is in the advanced stages of securing a £500m funding offer from a reputable private equity firm. We acknowledge the employment tribunal decision and are addressing all related matters. "The withdrawal from Innovate UK contracts was due to funding delays. Conigital Ltd. remains committed to transparency, compliance, and fulfilling our obligations to our staff and stakeholders.” ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e4mFFcbG 🔗 #unpaidstaff #investigation #breaking #funding #investment #autonomousvehicles #startup #deals #UKtech
