Unpopular opinion. I’ve always liked the idea of co-working spaces and thought they have so much potential. Yes, it’s easy to look at WeWork’s shortcomings, but their missteps shouldn’t define an entire industry, especially if the industry pre-dates WeWork by 15 years and has grown by +1000% in the last 2+ decades. Co-working spaces are supposed to be places of opportunities and possibilities—a harbor of rich cross-pollination of ideas, expertise, and knowledge to leverage. An active support network for startups, SMEs, and the curious. A sandbox for entrepreneurs and other ambitious minds to experiment, learn, and grow. And more. But most of the above are hard to do well, much less sustain. Perhaps, instead of replicating the past, more of these spaces would benefit from going back to basics. Be values-driven. Focused on building and growing niche individuals and businesses that align with your values. Be more Intentional in curatorial programming, authentic in community connection, and thoughtful in collaboration. Continue exhibiting courage in breaking traditional silos and display more ingenuity in pushing the boundaries of what a quality niche community that thrives might looks like. The future of work might need more of this.

We work from a co-working space and we love it! Do you know why? 🏢First off, the environment is energized. Looking at those smiling faces from different companies in the morning brings motivation to us. 🏢Another big perk is the flexibility that coworking allows. From time to time when choosing the seat, we have the comfort of choice here. 🏢The networking opportunities are also massive. You never know who you'll meet or what kind of synergies you'll discover just by grabbing a coffee in the shared cafe area. We've formed some great partnerships through random coworking run-ins. In fact, we also had a cricket match with one of our neighboring startups sitting next to us. If you're a small team, I highly recommend giving co-working a try. I have clearly only sharpened my appetite with this article to talk about coworking, a topic that not only I am engaged with, business-wise at V7 Startup Studio, but I am also passionate about, both as a social phenomenon and as a business. In the attempt to let out some ideas I feel are, unjustly, not debated enough, as well as to bring some clarity to coworking clients on a quest to understand their benefits, pricing and some other stuff, I wrote quite a lengthy piece I hope proves useful to all, including and mostly to the industry. We operate as a remote team at Firmhouse, which is a big part of our DNA. We have operated remotely long before it became popular during the pandemic. Creating and building personal relationships as a remote team is hard, so twice a year we gather the team in one place to spend quality time together. It’s one of my favorite things we do as a team. Connecting in person is something that can’t be replaced by video calls. Meeting our newest team members for the first time during the retreat was one of the absolute highlights for me personally. Yet, every time, a retreat confirms how strong our culture and values are, even when we built them remotely. As a founder, it’s easy to think you don’t spend enough time deliberately creating and maintaining the principles of your culture, as it’s not easy to measure. The secret to a good retreat? Optimize loosely for people to mingle and connect. It’s easy to fill up a schedule with sessions, but it’s the downtime where people connect. Make sure there is enough time for people to have meaningful conversations that emerge organically. Deidre wrote up this beautiful article to share our insights from this retreat.
