Google just announced that they will "start testing Search and Shopping ads in AI Overviews for users in the U.S. They will have the opportunity to appear within the AI Overview in a section clearly labeled as “sponsored” when they’re relevant to both the query and the information in the AI Overview." So, what does this mean for digital advertisers? "While we don't know all of the details about how or when these ads will show, it's likely going to be even more important for advertisers to lean into broad match and make sure they have all of the relevant product information built out within their GMC feed to be eligible for AI searches." Stephanie Groudle, Senior Account Strategy Director at Adlucent, shared. She went on to say that "it will also be interesting to see if there will be an increase in queries that align with AI-based searches around "how to," etc." What do you think about Google's announcement? Will paid ads see a boost in performance? How do you intend to pivot? https://lnkd.in/d35nuR7q #ShoppingAds #PaidSearch #PerformanceMarketing

🔹 Google set to bring ads in search AI Overviews Google will start testing search and shopping ads in its AI-generated answers in the U.S., the Alphabet-owned company said on Tuesday, days after it rolled out the AI Overviews feature widely at its annual I/O conference. Ads will appear in a 'sponsored' section within AI Overview based on the query's relevance and information, , the company said, opens new tab in a blog post. Google has been looking to extend its dominance beyond traditional search advertising to emerging generative AI tech. It aims to boost its ad sales, a major source of revenue for the tech giant, by integrating AI in its search engine. Google reported a 13% increase in advertising sales, reaching $61.7 billion in the first quarter ended March 31. The company said it would continue to test and learn new ad formats, getting feedback from advertisers. Last week, at its I/O conference, Alphabet showed how it is building on AI across its businesses, including a beefed-up Gemini chatbot and improvements to its prized search engine.

Google announces new ad formats and options, including for AI Overviews panels. This is truly comical unless by "people", they mean "shareholders", and by "helpful", they mean "generates more revenue". "In early testing, we’ve heard that people find the ads appearing above and below the AI-generated overview helpful. Soon, we’ll start testing Search and Shopping ads in AI Overviews for users in the U.S." - Google Blog https://lnkd.in/ejxXqmWN #google #monopoly #copyrightabuse

Google is now integrating ads into its AI Overviews, providing advertising opportunities within it's AI-powered search tools. With ads labeled “Sponsored” for transparency, I wonder when this will roll out in the UK. Google reports they have found this to provide a better search experience for those of us who use AI Overview, and this seems to align with Google’s business model of monetising search. https://lnkd.in/ezN585rY

Been wondering about ad placements against SGE? Well, it's pretty much what I expected--looks kinda like just another ad placement within existing campaign structures, at least for now. There are already some pricing differentials built into existing campaigns based on placement, so I suppose its still possible that SGE results will carry some kind of price premium. "Soon, we’ll start testing Search and Shopping ads in AI Overviews for users in the U.S. They will have the opportunity to appear within the AI Overview in a section clearly labeled as “sponsored” when they’re relevant to both the query and the information in the AI Overview. There’s no action needed from advertisers: Ads from existing Search, Performance Max, and Standard Shopping campaigns have the opportunity to appear within the AI Overview."

Google teased a number of generative AI developments for advertisers coming down the pike as part of its Marketing Live showcase, including more ad formats integrated into the new AI Overview summaries in search. The company unveiled fresh AI capabilities for its commerce-oriented Shopping ads, including virtual try-ons and 3D-generated features. Another AI-assisted offering currently being tested helps consumers navigate complex purchase decisions, like figuring out short-term storage, when using search. For marketers, Google is implementing more granular controls for its AI-powered Performance Max campaigns, such as the ability to share specific font and color guidelines. Marketers will receive additional AI editing capabilities to add new objects to ads and adjust format, size and orientation. https://lnkd.in/g3dVnNbU #digitalmouth #generativeAI #digitalmedia #AIadvertising

Google's AI Overview is slowly rolling out in the US with ads launching on mobile. Likely a while before it makes it to the European or Irish markets, but in the meantime - what we do know: When do ads appear? When the query has commercial intent or a product/service is the relevant answer in that instance. How do advertisers appear in AI Overview Ads? If you're using AI-powered ads already, such as Shopping or P-Max. Can you report on AI Overview Ads Performance? Short answer, no. However, you could infer it from your Search Query report. Consider, for example the rising trend of queries with 5+ words. For now - watch this space! https://lnkd.in/ggWFMxhm

⚠️ Ads are coming to AI Overviews ⚠️ As predicted, Google is bringing ads to AI Overviews - and it's set to shake things up A LOT. These sponsored ads pop up alongside AI-generated search results, giving businesses a prime spot to reach potential customers. Here's what you need to know: ✅ No Extra Work If you're already running Search, Shopping, or Performance Max campaigns, your ads could appear in these AI Overviews (although, for the moment, you may not have much control over them). 🚩 Prime Placement While these ads appear below the AI-generated answer, they're still in a high-traffic area in that space between the AI Overview and the usual links below. 📊 Limited Reporting Unfortunately, you can't track the specific performance of these ads - yet! We eventually expect this to change. ❌ No Opt-Out Google's got these ads locked in place. If you're running Google Ads then you're going to be part of the rollout. This may change, but with Google's advertising arm likely to want to measure the revenue impact of running ads in AI Overviews, they'll want to gather as much ad data as they possibly can. 🌐 US-Only (For Now) This initial rollout will only be visible to US-based mobile users. As with the initial AI Overview rollout (as the Search Generative Experience), Google will likely want a lot of data and time to process how people engage with these ads before they fully roll them out globally. But they're coming. So be ready. In the meantime, focus on and optimise your website to appear in the organic AI Overviews (we've a how-to video linked in the comments below). What do you think? Are you happy to see these ads roll out? Are you excited to get your business featured in them too? Let us know in the comments below!

Two thoughts on the AI Overviews ads rollout: 1. My guess is this isn’t the last iteration we’ll see of ads inside AI Overviews. It’s a high stakes game for Google to get this right, with search ads being such a large proportion of their revenue. 2. We still don’t know what CTRs look like from AI Overviews. How Google implements text ads will give us a clue though: If the normal AI Overviews organic links have a high CTR, we may see sponsored links in there too. If the AI Overviews organic links DON’T have a high CTR, Google will need to do something totally different with text ads, or the cost per click model won’t be profitable.

*Friday rant alert!* Google has launched a new way for advertisers' ads to be shown in the SERPS in the US this week, called AI Overviews. I don't have a problem with the principal of this - they had to do something which works with organic AI results. But I do want to know whether AI Overviews Ads represent good value or not for my clients, and how can I do that if, as Danny Goodwin points out in his article, Google won't report on how AI Overviews Ads are performing? We also can't opt out of the placement, which means that even if we could tell that they don't work well for a client, we can't do anything about it. This development was announced back in May, and, since nobody has spotted the ads in the wild, evidently they haven't been thoroughly tested yet. So advertisers' budget is being used for the purposes of live testing Google's new feature, and the only ones who know whether they are good or bad for campaign performance is Google. It's one more example of how the contract between Google and it's customers is eroded by a total lack of transparency in how that advertisers' money is actually being spent.
