Summer interns - the most important thing you can do for your future, is to meet and build relationships with alumni in your city, during your summer. All of you are focused primarily on securing a PPO (Pre Placement Offer) from your summer employer, which is good, but that’s a short term outcome. Your alumni network is your long term source of mentorship and opportunities and you need to start building it from day 1 on campus and particularly during your summer internship. Meet as many alumni as you can in person. How? 1. Meet alumni in your summer company 2. Meet your seniors in your city 3. Connect with specific alumni in your city you want mentorship from, on LinkedIn with a personalized message asking for their time for a coffee and their mentorship and advice Also spend time building relationships with other peers and senior executives at your summer employer. They will all eventually move on to other companies, roles and even countries, giving you an even wider network. Sit with different people every day at lunch in office. Build as many relationships as possible. Kudos to our current student Noah Francis Jose who took the initiative to meet our alum Anand Iyer recently.
