We turned 5 years old! 🎂 And to celebrate we released a sneak peak into five NEW things we are up to. 1. East Coast Office: Daniel and his family are moving to New York this summer! An East Coast location will only improve our current levels of support and service. 2. New Resource: Building a Vulnerability Mindset. This resource will unpack many aspects of vulnerability and why it is important to building stronger school communities. 3. New Resource: Understanding Power Dynamics. Power can be thought of in three ways: 1) exerted from the top down in a form of control; 2) emerging everywhere; and 3) an act of making change through processes of learning, experiencing, and being in the world. Stay tuned for more about the implications for schools. 4. Impact Story: Decolonizing team structures. We’re working with the Museum of Us to implement a systems approach complemented by a decolonization lens to their internal improvement efforts. 5. New protocol: Using empathy interviews to design individual student supports with students, not for students. We asked those who received our newsletter which they were most excited about, but we are curious what you think. Let us know and we will share more details over the next week. 🦁 Feeling the Roar of Detroit Lions! 🦁 Last night's thrilling victory by the Detroit Lions wasn't just a win on the field; it was a reflection of Detroit's indomitable spirit. As a proud Detroiter and an innovator, witnessing this triumph fills me with immense joy and optimism for our city's future. But what truly stands out for me is the remarkable dedication of our team members in nurturing our communities, particularly the youth. Their commitment is igniting a spark in our young people, teaching them that we, as Detroiters, deliver on our promises with vigor and heart. Looking forward to February 3rd, 'The Future of Our Youth in Tech' event, a collaboration between Google Code, Black Tech Saturdays, and Derrick Coleman’s DC Elite Foundation, is set to make a significant impact. I am eagerly anticipating this day, ready to embrace and incorporate the insights! These initiatives by our community leaders and organizations exemplify the essence of Detroit's spirit. Calling Gen Z ❗ You are one of the youngest generations eligible to join governing boards ☝ Only 1% of governors are in the 18-29 age range creating a generational gap within school boards and lack of diversity. But what can Gen Z offer? 👁 A Fresh Insight: Members of this generation only left school in the last decade, meaning they can recount pressing issues they experienced during their school journey. 📱 A Digital Upbringing: Younger generations have grown up around technology making them more "tech savvy" - they understand the required skills younger generations will need leading into their professional lives which should be considered by governing boards. 🔨 Adaptability: Gen Z have grown up in a fast-paced world, through world events and technological advancements they have demonstrated their resiliency and resourcefulness. Celebrating a 7-Year Partnership of Impact!    We’re proud to highlight the incredible work and continued partnership between the Center for Educational Partnerships (CEP) and Colonial Life. Through collaboration, we’ve reached over 200 participants from the US, Ireland, and the UK at the recent Unum Community Circle event.    Cindy Van Buren, Ph.D., Director of CEP, shared insights into how we catalyze innovation, elevate best practices, and position educators to drive meaningful change in South Carolina’s K-12 schools. Here are some highlights from our ongoing initiatives:    📈 CarolinaTIP: Thanks to this innovative support program, over 90% of participating teachers have remained in the classroom.  💡 Classroom Catalyst Grants: In partnership with Colonial Life, we empower educators with $1,000 to enhance inquiry-based learning.  🎓 Apple Core Initiative: Opening doors for historically underrepresented high school students to join the teaching profession.  🌟 Education Leaders Experience (ELE): A ten-month program growing leadership in South Carolina’s educators.    Together, we’re making a difference in the lives of teachers, students, and communities! 🙌 #CEPPartnership #EducationalImpact #CommunityCircle #PartneringWithPurpose

The #materialityassessment first arrived on my radar about 6 years ago, right at time when I was looking to expand my toolkit for what business could do to improve access to opportunity. An assessment to help organizations figure out and focus on their most relevant issues to address and opportunities within their leverage felt like an important starting point. As the emergence of #doublemateriality formally expands the definition of what could be material beyond just those issues that have influence on enterprise value to also consider the actual and potential outward impacts the organization and its operations have on the economy, the environment, and people, it feels like even more critical bedrock for business decision-making towards a more just and sustainable world. I'm no expert (I find BSR and qb explainers very useful, linked in the comments!) but I'm interested in what this means for the direction and effectiveness of business in contributing to more positive outcomes in the world. And so I'm excited to facilitate a leadership lab convo about what this all means with Sam Hartsock inside the Girls Club Collective (and grateful to Lis Best for creating the space for this convo!). Insightful article about Generation Alpha and what Educators need to know about them! "This generation of learners can access whatever information they want, which may be the reason many educators I work with are noticing they are no longer engaged in learning at school. One way to create relevance and engagement for our students is to lean into what they value. To help educators do that, I often ask them: “Do we know what our students value? If not, how can we find out?” One snag for middle school teachers is that many of their students are still figuring out who they are and what they value, so our role is to support them in that exploration as we craft learning experiences."
