Try This in Your Next OKR Cycle: the Full Goal Lifecycle Every OKR book and training will tell you the key results should be about outcomes (measurable changes in business, user, or system behavior) and for good reason — our goals should be about what we wish to achieve rather than what we plan to do. And yet most companies fail to make outcomes-based OKRs work. The key reasons is that outcome goals require answering some important questions: what are the key challenges and opportunities? what are users' relevant jobs. pains and gains? what are competitors doing about it? what are some valid ideas? Without answering these questions it's hard to know how to create the change, how long will it take, and if it is at all possible. So to make outcome goals work, we need to start with two the important phases: Research and Discovery. Companies that skip these phases and jump directly to Delivery set themselves for failure. There's also a fourth phase: Monitoring. That too is often overlooked. Companies that understand the full goal lifecycle, and are able to manage it, achieve outcomes much more effectively — a massive competitive advantage. Happy to see an updated Evidenced-Based Management (EBM) guide from Scrum.org. The new edition maintains the foundational EBM concepts while refining the explanations for better understanding and application. Notable updates include a revised subtitle, "Improving value delivery under conditions of uncertainty," which more accurately reflects EBM's purpose. The guide introduces mission and vision framing for strategic goals and acknowledges the potential for multiple strategic goals within larger organizations. Inputs and impacts are categorized as types of measures, while descriptions of the Key Value Areas (KVAs) have been clarified and aligned with different measure types. Enhanced explanations for the "Experiment Loop" and an example measure of employee engagement have been added to illustrate how these concepts help improve value delivery.
