A CDS-Based Energy Efficient Clustering for Mobile WSN using Past Information
Proceedings of ICEIT Conference on Advances in Mobile Communications, Networking and Computing
Mobility in the nodes of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) gives rise to various topological, routing and network management problems. Mobility in the nodes of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) gives rise to various topological, routing and network management problems. Several Connected Dominating Set (CDS) based clustering algorithms exist for WSN with both static and dynamic nodes. Here the CDS acts as the virtual backbone of the network which saves energy in the selection of cluster heads. The lifetime of a WSN can be increased by developing energy-efficient protocols based on CDS for constructing cluster and for choosing cluster head. This paper proposes an algorithm which is suitable for dynamic nodes in WSN and utilizes the concept of CDS for selection of cluster heads. Proposed algorithm saves the current state information of the network including CDS size, CDS participants and cluster heads for future utility. Saved state information is utilized as input in the next iteration for selection of CDS and cluster head when network mobility is found. With the help of past knowledge of the CDS structure, proposed algorithm finds the longest and still connected dominating set which act as an initial point for the next iteration. Further, nodes which are not a part of the partial (original) CDS and their clusters, as well as members of the new formed CDS are searched as candidates for new cluster head on the basis of factors like: residual energy, node density, relative distance and degree of nodes. Proposed algorithm reduces the cost of re-computation. This makes the network energy-efficient and extends the lifetime of its nodes.
