Loading... Angels Fallby Nora RobertsThis one pushed all the right buttons for me! I enjoyed the romance between Reece and Brody along with all the other quirky town characters. It was all so very interesting to me. I don't always enjoy too much description but this was done perfectly. It seemed like such a gorgeous place to live. I had a short list of suspects for the murderer and that person ended up being on it. I still wasn't sure who the culprit was until the reveal. Well done N R! I get that the author is famous and wants to earn top dollar. I just wish her books were on Kindle Unlimited so readers who struggle financially could afford them, as they are pricey. Angels Fall 4 Stars In the aftermath of a traumatic event, Reese Gilmore is on a journey of healing and self-discovery when she arrives in the small town of Angel's Fist and finds herself putting down stakes. Life seems to be looking up for Reese until she witnesses a brutal murder while hiking in the mountains. Reese's past and a lack of evidence at the crime scene lead the police and many of the townsfolk to question Reese's account, but local author, Jamison Brody, is convinced and the two join forces to uncover the truth. As this book is a re-read, I decided to listen to the audiobook narrated by Joyce Bean this time around. While Bean is not a go-to narrator for me, she does a very good job with both the male and female voices. She delivers Brody's cranky one-liners with aplomb and prevents Reese from sounding too overwrought and whiny. Brody is definitely a different type of hero for Nora. It was difficult to like him at first because of his abrasive personality, but he eventually grew on me precisely because of his straightforward no-nonsense manner. It is very clear that he truly cares about Reece, believes in her, and does not pity her, which is exactly what she needs. Reese is a likable heroine as, despite her apparent emotional fragility, she is a strong and resilient survivor. The fact that she doesn't cave to the villain's decidedly malicious tricks is a testament to her strength of character. As a re-read, the identity of the killer was not a mystery, but it was fun retracing Reese and Brody's journey and the last few chapters are intense and exciting. That said, the book is in dire need of an epilogue with the reactions of all of the other characters to the revelation of the truth. Overall, an engaging read, and I particularly enjoyed the small-town vibe and supporting cast. Nora Roberts is usually a slightly above middle of the road read for me. This one she hit out of the park. Reece is the only survivor of a shooting spree in Boston. At her new place in Wyoming she witnesses a murder but because of her history of a breakdown after the first shooting no one believes her. Characterization is wonderful. Reece grows over the course of the book. She starts out fragile and very damaged and grows stronger in what she is mentally able to accomplish and she doesn't give up on trying to find the murder that only she saw. The hero, Brody, was not at all a cookie cutter hero. He is a mystery writer and is surly and sarcastic and doesn't fall all over her trying to baby her. He does believe her though and learns to love her. There are several very interesting secondary characters and enough red herrings to keep me guessing as to the murderer for much longer than normal in this sort of book. The mystery and romance were blended and balanced perfectly in this one. Not an edge of your seat thriller but a more character driven book. Really sterling writing and just perfect reading for a long Sunday afternoon. Reese Gilmore survived a brutal crime and, fighting nightmares and panic attacks, went on the run. Settling in picturesque Angel’s Fist, Wyoming, she applies for, and accepts, a job as a cook at the local diner. While hiking in the mountains, she sees a man brutally attacking a woman. Looking for help, she bumps into Brody, a reclusive loner, and relates what she’s seen. Together, they go to the police, but the investigators find no sign of the crime. Although no one believes her about the supposed attack, Reese considers moving on, but several menacing events make it clear that someone wants her gone. Can she find the killer in Angel’s Fist before it’s too late? A strong sense of place anchors this romantic suspense narrative filled with believable, nuanced characters. Along with Reese and Brody, diner owner Joanie is a strong, likable character that fits perfectly into this fictional town. The intriguing plot keeps the readers involved in the telling of the tale and, although astute readers are likely to identify the culprit before the reveal, the complex plot twists keep interest high. The romance between Reese and Brody unfolds as expected and serves as a counterpoint to the ominous aspects of the story. Recommended. I thought that "Angels Fall" was really good. This is the Nora Roberts I have missed for a while. A really great heroine (Reece) and hero (Brody). A mystery to be solved. And gorgeous descriptions of the location and food that everyone was eating. Reece Gilmore is recovering from a tragedy that had her running from Boston to bumming around the U.S. Right now she has arrived at Angel's Fist in Wyoming. Before her tragedy she was an up and coming chef. Answering a help wanted sign at the local diner in Angel's Fist, Reece wonders if she can stay here for a while and get start to feel a bit normal again. Reece meets a cast of characters that I ended up enjoying. Her peace is disturbed though when she is out on a hike and witnesses a man strangling a woman to death. When Reece goes to investigate, there's no body, and man wonder if Reece's past is causing her to hallucinate. I think the big reason why I liked this book so much is that you get to see Reece becoming more sure of herself over time. She develops feelings for Brody and she for him. And you get to see his reluctance to being in a relationship change over time as he starts to care more for Reece. Plus the pair do a bit of sleuthing in order to figure out who the mystery woman was that Reece saw that was murdered. I did love the writing as it related to Angel's Fist and the meals that Reece cooked. I think some people may find it overly long, but honestly, I needed a long book to read while flying this past week so I am glad that it was a long book. I thought the ending was really good and I honestly didn't see the bad guy coming. I thought that Roberts did a great job of not letting us catch on until Reece realized who it was that was the murderer. I needed a break after a couple of heavy books in a row, so turned to my old standby NR. I like books about food and cooking, and I love NR's descriptions of parts of the USA in which I have never been, but long to visit. However I am a fan of plotlines involving gaslighting and manipulation, so this didn't end up being one of my favorites. Reece Gilmore was a chef in Boston where she was the only survivor of a brutal slaying at her restaurant. After therapy and hospitalization, Reece takes to the road in search of peace. Still suffering some of the aftereffects of her horrendous attack, she is hoping that Angel's Fist will provider her some relief from the panic attacks and fear that have taken over her life. She settles into the small town working as a cook in the local diner, but while hiking Reece sees a murder take place. She is certain of what she has seen, and the only one that will believe her is a popular author Brody. Brody believes Reece, but has also been informed of her past. He sees some of her unusual behavior, but sticks with his gut instinct that she is telling the truth. I will be the first to say I am not a big Nora Roberts fan but I love her "In Death" series as J.D. Robb. (Yeah, I know that makes me from a different planet.) However I found that "Angels Fall" is an enjoyable romance with a nice mystery embedded in it. It's certainly possible to guess the killer's identity, but you're better than I am if you're completely sure until near the end. This was a slow build about a young woman running from her traumatic past. She thinks she's finally found a place to safely land and deal with her PTSD, but shortly after her arrival at Angel's Fist, she witnesses murder. The only problem? No one believes her. This was one of those books that was just okay for me. It wasn't bad, but it didn't ring any bells either. It's possible I need to switch genres for a bit. Brody was a big jerk in the beginning, but I did like how Reece was able to use his curt attitude to pull herself up by the bootstraps. The mystery aspect was decent, a little too drawn out in places, but decent. The last third of the book was probably the best part. If I were rating that alone, I'd give it at least 4 stars. While working as a chef in a Boston restaurant, Reece Gilmore becomes the only survivor of a shooting spree that killed all of her co-workers. Needing a change, Reece heads west and stops in Angel's Fist, Wyoming, nestled in the beautiful Grand Tetons. She takes a job as the cook in a local diner and begins to make tentative friendships with the townfolk, including handsome mystery writer, Brody. On an afternoon hike Reece sees what she believes to be the murder of a young woman. When she reports what she saw most people tend to think it is her imagination bringing up the horrors of her past. The one person who does believe her is Brody and he will do anything to protect Reece (and get her into bed at every opportunity). The murderer realizes that Reece knows what happened and he uses her past fears to keep her unbalanced and to even start doubting herself. I enjoyed the mystery and suspense of this book but 'boy howdy!' is there ever a lot of other 'activity' going on between the sheets. This was my first Nora Roberts book and I just have to ask: Are her characters always so lusty? Liked this book as read a while ago - Nora Roberts always pulls out a great story! Reece Gilmore has come a long way to see the stunning view below her. As the sole survivor of a brutal crime back East, she has been on the run, desperately fighting the nightmares and panic attacks that haunt her. Reece settles in Angel's Fist, Wyoming-temporarily, at least-and takes a job at a local diner. And now she's hiked this mountain all by herself. It was glorious, she thought, as she peered through her binoculars at the Snake River churning below. And no one in Angel's Fist seems to believe her. After all, she's a newcomer in town, with a reputation for being jumpy and jittery-maybe even a little fragile. Maybe it's time to run again, to move on . . . It probably won't go on my [a:Nora Roberts|625|Nora Roberts|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1198342300p2/625.jpg] favorites shelf, but it was pretty good. The opening chapter or so actually put me off this book when it initially came out - something about Reece was very off-putting to me. Once I got into the story, though, I liked her quite a bit better. I would have liked Joanie more than I did if it hadn't been emphasized so heavily that she was a smoker (I personally have a very low squick threshold when it comes to smoking, so the frequent references and descriptions of it put me completely off.) I wish I could say that I liked Brody (I certainly didn't dislike him) but there seemed to be very little character development for him, and virtually none to their relationship other than getting them hooked up as soon as possible and then on with the main plot-line. ([b:Blue Smoke|114184|Blue Smoke|Nora Roberts|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1217909729s/114184.jpg|1553106] suffered from this same issue in my opinion.) The main plot-line was handled very well, and I wasn't sure who the villain was until right at the reveal, and had quite a few concerns about who it would be. But I really, really would have liked more of an epilogue. The end was far too abrupt and had me literally looking for the other pages of the book. Halfway through this story, it struck me that I had seen the TV movie of this, some time ago, and I knew how it ended. Of course, thie book is far superior and what an entertaining read it was. Small town setting wihere everybody looks out for everyone and their business. Favourite characters, Mac Drubber grocery store and Mayor, he had a soft spot for Reece, Lothario Lol and his ever patient sweetheart Linda-Gail. Reece and Brody made a cute couple My second NR read.A woman with a tragic history witnesses a murder in a small one-horse town in the mountains of Wyoming. Now she must deal with both tragedies and keep her sanity. Reminded me of the old movies, Gaslight or Rear Window.A nice blend of mystery and romance while leaving enough to the imagination. My thanks to my friends Carole and Mary for recommending this to me. |

This is a fun read, a light snack in between, but a really tasty one. ( )
