The Bone Hacker is written by Kathy Reichs.
A Temperance Brennan Novel, Book #22.
“Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan follows a series of bizarre disappearances on the islands of Turks and Caicos and enters a sinister labyrinth in which a new technology may wreak world wide havoc.”
Book #22 - still interesting and complex and ‘fresh’ with each new case.
I understand this is not a medical/science text, yet I pick up so many facts about forensic anthropology; how so much information can be retrieved from bone samples. Amazing.

Tempe goes off on her own to the Carribean. Several schemes are afloat but she keeps them all in order. The main scheme is far-fetched but it does provide some bad actors. Strangely, we lost a promising character in the first half of the book. The romance is full-speed ahead. ( )

Number 22 in the series, so I’m sure Kathy Reichs can be forgiven if her books are getting to be a little bit formulaic. I’ve read each and everyone and this is the one that just recently came out. I really did enjoy the book. I always like visiting with Tempe and Ryan. I also enjoy the locales where Tempe finds her self. In this particular one is in Turks and Caicos‘s when she is on the hunt for a killer that left a dead body in his wake back in Montreal, and he was also missing a hand. A police inspector from Turks and Caicos’s calls, Tempe and says that she thinks that she has some dead bodies down in her country that are very similar to the one that Tempe is working on. Tempe, heads down, thinking that it might help solve a few mysteries and she might be able to enjoy a nice little vacation in her busy life. But of course, things never do go as planned in any of these books, and she finds herself deep in a huge conspiracy that actually does appear to be connected to her dead body in Montreal. I did find that the book contained a little too many coincidences, and that kind of put me off a bit, so that is why the three stars. I do enjoy the forensic information that comes out in these books, and I look forward to reading the next one in the series. I did listen to this book on audiobook, and that made it an enjoyable experience. ( )

I enjoyed this book. I have been a fan of this series for many years. I haven’t read all of the installments just yet but I have picked up most of them. This book takes Temperance out of town to the Turks and Caicos islands. It seems that there is a killer target young attractive men, cutting off one of their hands before disposing of the bodies. Once Tempe gets to the islands, she is drawn into another case that is equally perplexing. I found this novel to be quite the page-turner.

Tempe spent the bulk of this installment working the case of the local detectives. She does spend some time doing forensic anthropology, of course, but I felt like the bulk of the story was set away from the lab. The mysteries kept me guessing and I loved getting to know the characters on the islands. I found the pacing of the book to be well done, although I did feel that the ending seemed a bit rushed. All in all, this was an entertaining mystery.

I would recommend this book to others. This is the twenty-second novel in the long-running Temperance Brennan series but it would work well as a stand-alone since the mystery is completely contained in this book. I cannot wait to read more of this well-written series!

I received a review copy of this book from Scribner. ( )

The Bone Hacker is Kathy Reichs' long running Temperance Brennan series.

For those who haven't listened to this series yet, Tempe is a forensic anthropologist who works with both American and Canadian labs, cases and police forces.

The Bone Hacker finds Tempe examining the remains of a person who has been killed by a lightning strike. Or have they? Her findings may be a link to other cases on the islands of Turks and Caicos.

I have always liked Tempe as a lead character. She's intelligent, tenacious and doesn't back down. Her inner dialogue gives the reader a better sense of 'knowing' her. And it's quite funny at times.

The solving of the cases always fascinates me. In addition to the forensics clues, Tempe's intuitions, skill sets and determination are put to good use.

Taking the setting to a new location also gives us some new supporting players. Two Turks and Caicos police added a lot to this tale.

The case itself is different and led to some answers I hadn't expected when the book started. (And you'll find out where the title comes in!)

The Bone Hacker kept me engrossed from the first chapter to the last. Another great entry in the series, and I'm looking forward to the 23rd.

The reader for the audiobook was Linda Emond and she was fantastic. She has a very versatile voice. Her voice has movement, rising and falling as she narrates. Emond's voice was perfect and will, for me, always be the voice of Tempe. The voices for the new supporting characters were believable and easily identified. When there's talking, it's easy to believe there are two people speaking. I found by listening to this one, I took in more. I heard the humor in Reich's writing. Yes, there are lots of funny lines in such a 'deadly' book. Her voice is pleasant to listen to and easy to understand. And as I always say, I feel more drawn in to a tale when I listen. ( )

I always want to love a Kathy Reichs novel and I did enjoy and do recommend The Bone Hacker, but it fell a little short for me to love it. I do enjoy the adventure of heading to the Turks and Caicos, a place I have never been, but loved learning about, murder and all.

I smiled and laughed at the picture her words brought to mind of her dog, Birdie, sitting at the table minding her manners so she can eat with her human family.

A death in Canada has her on a plane to the Turks and Caicos faster than she can think, WTH. And there my confusion begins. Kathy Reichs has so much going on that doesn’t seem to connect in any way. I know to be patient, that most authors will bring it all together and once I have the full picture it all makes sense.

For an established author like Kathy Reich, I have very high expectations and look for excellence. I did not find that here, but Musgrove, then Monk grew on me. Island life doesn’t function the same as on the mainland, and I love the individuality of the characters.

I didn’t find anything earth shattering, but The Bone Hacker did have its moments. It confirmed for me…privacy is an illusion. If half of what I read in the book was true, unless you are completely off the grid, big brother is watching.

I enjoyed The Bone Hacker by Kathy Reichs, but it was not one of my favorites. Regardless, I am sure I will pick up the next book of hers I see.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of The Bone Hacker by Kathy Reichs.

The Bone Hacker by Kathy Reichs is a highly recommended thriller and the 22nd novel in the series featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance (Tempe) Brennan.

For this outing Tempe starts out in Montreal, Canada, but circumstances send her to a tropical setting in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). In Canada, while examining a young man thought to have been struck by lightning, Tempe notices a an unusual tattoo that she discovers is tied to the islands of Turks and Caicos. Tiersa Musgrove, the police superintendent there, enlists her help to solve the disappearance of male tourists over the years. These cases are ongoing and when new bodies turn up, the potential danger to Tempe also rises.

The writing is entertaining and intelligent, as expected, and Tempe is always a perceptive, strong and resourceful character. She is capable and able to uncover evidence and clues needed to figure out what is going on with her cases. And, while in the investigations of the cases are interesting, there is always danger nearby and it always comes uncomfortably close to Tempe.

As with other books in the series, The Bone Hacker can be read as a stand alone novel. Author Kathy Reichs, much like her fictional character, is a forensic anthropologist for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, State of North Carolina, and for the Laboratoire des Sciences Judiciaires et de Médecine Légale for the province of Quebec. This expertise and insight is brought into every novel she writes.

Tempe Brennan is back in action in Montreal when a supposed lightning strike victim sends her down a rabbit hole that takes her to the Turks and Caicos islands. It was nice to see Tempe outside her usual Charlotte/Montreal environs and watch her adapt to not having all her typical resources, and struggling to keep her temper. As always, an engaging read with realistic details.

I hadn’t read a Tempe Brennan novel in several years, and this made for a great reunion.. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these forensic mysteries! Tempe seems more wise-cracking than I remembered, but the mystery flowed and it was a quick and fun read. And as it takes place in Turks and Caicos, it almost qualifies as a beach read! I will definitely be looking up the other recent books in the series that I’ve missed.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this novel. ( )

Another well-crafted installment in this entertaining crime thriller series.

How appropriate to read and review this ARC while in the midst of watching the show "Bones" from start to finish. I'm on Season 11 and can't help but shake my head as the characters on television are only loosely based on those in these books. And by that I mean, the books are so much better! In fact, I really like Tempe a whole lot more on paper.

I'm a real sucker for medical details of any kind and I love that about this series. Since the author knows her field, it translates to excellent clinical descriptions. The main plot of this one grabs immediately -- Tempe is examining bones thought to be related to the disappearances of young, good-looking men on the islands of Turks and Caicos. The only thing the men have in common is that they came to this Caribbean paradise and vanished. In addition, Tempe rides along with a local detective to a really strange death scene: a luxury boat is floating near shore about 600 miles off course and all of the passengers are dead. Nothing is wrong with the boat's systems. None of the victims has obvious injuries. As usual, there are several different tracks of investigation going on and Tempe gets involved.

I always look forward to a new installment in the series, this being one of the few that I still try to keep up with. Thank you to NetGalley and Scribner for this e-book ARC to read, review, and recommend.

Sure, you could read this as a standalone, but why? Try the previous 21 first! ( )

For this, the twenty second in the Temperance Brennan series, Reichs changes location for most of the book. Tempe is a forensic pathologist who works both in Quebec and North Carolina. When a citizen of the Turks and Caicos is shot in Quebec, a detective from that country enlists Tempe’s help in solving a case in that tropical land. Tempe is on her own, as boyfriend Ryan is involved in his own case in Canada.

The island mystery involves the disappearance of some young male tourists over the years; the bodies of two of them have recently been discovered. When Tempe arrives in Provo T&C, she is immediately caught up in yet another case. A boat is found with 5 dead people aboard, far off course and out of gas. Could they possible be related? Tne investigation puts both Tempe and island detectives in danger.

Although this would work as a standalone, I have read all of the books in this series. I enjoy Reichs’ writing. She has a clever way with words and a good sense of humor comes through in Tempe’s biting wit. While the narrative does get a bit technical at times, I always learn something new from Tempe’s cases. Reichs is a master at building up suspense at the end of each chapter with a tease that makes the reader want jump into the next one.

This is a nice addition to the series and I liked the change of venue.

Thanks to #netgalley and #scribner for the ARC ( )

First off: if you're going to read this book and haven't yet looked at the promo material—don't. (I'm also realizing that I had similar regrets when reading Reichs' The Bone Code. Surely readers can be drawn to these books without being put in a place where too much of the mystery becomes clear before one opens the covers.)

That said, I enjoyed this title as I've enjoyed all of Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan novels, but I am disappointed because the plotting while complex, also felt somewhat preordained. I'm not usually good at guessing whodunnit before the denouement, but I had this one figured out by time I'd reached the 2/3 point. I very much enjoyed reading The Bone Hacker, but while the mix of mysteries within this mystery is complex, it's somehow not as perplexing as it might be.

If you've been following Temperance Brennan from the start, you'll get real enjoyment out of this title. If the series is new for you, you may want to read some of the earlier volumes first in order to understand the relationships among the characters.

I received a free electronic review copy of this title from the publisher via NetGalley; the opinions are my own. ( )

anthropologist, crime-thriller, dismemberment, due-diligence, ex-cop, family, family-dynamics, forensic-consultant, forensics, friendship, law-enforcement, mutilation, read, relationships, serial-murder, snark-fest, suspense, verbal-humor*****

Yowza!
Brennan has her locals (including her personal partner), added consultants, the Caribs, and even the freaking FBI to contend with on this one. The first mutilated body leads to several more, and those have their left hand removed. And then it REALLY gets complicated. Another riveting read that is all too possible.
I requested and received an EARC from Scribner via NetGalley. Thank you! ( )
