Building on wisdom from Hindu, Christian, and Kaballah traditions, this comprehensive guide to energy healing reveals the hidden stresses, beliefs, and attitudes that cause illness. Anatomy of the Spirit is the boldest presentation of energy medicine to date, written by one of its premier practitioners, internationally acclaimed medical intuitive Caroline Myss, who is amongst the "hottest new voices in the alternative health/spirituality scene" (Publishers Weekly). Based on fifteen years of research into energy medicine, Dr. Myss's work shows how every illness corresponds to a pattern of emotional and psychological stresses, beliefs, and attitudes that have influenced corresponding areas of the human body. Anatomy of the Spirit also presents Dr. Myss's breakthrough model of the body's seven centers of spiritual and physical power, in which she synthesizes the ancient wisdom of three spiritual traditions-the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life-to demonstrate the seven stages through which everyone must pass in the search for higher consciousness and spiritual maturity. With this model, Dr. Myss shows how you can develop your own latent powers of intuition as you simultaneously cultivate your personal power and spiritual growth. By teaching you to see your body and spirit in a new way, Anatomy of the Spirit provides you with the tools for spiritual maturity and physical wholeness that will change your life.

DNF around 40% because I was so uncomfortable with how she spoke about AIDS and gay people and Latin American hetero married men sleeping with men just to be macho?? I don’t think that’s how human sexuality works, Caroline. That’s on or around page 107 in paperback editions. ( )

Anatomy of the Spirit is the first book to unify Eastern and Western spiritual healing into a programme for physical healing and personal power. In this breakthrough view of mind, body and spirit, Caroline Myss demonstrates that the seven stages through which everyone must pass in the search for consciousness and spiritual maturity are the same in all traditions and are also the same seven stages for healing.
During her many years of research into the power centres of the body, Myss has uncovered strong evidence that each illness we develop corresponds to a very specific pattern of emotional and psychological stress and that certain beliefs and attitudes influence corresponding areas of the human body. For example, fears regarding financial stress affect the health of the lower back; emotional barriers to experiencing love undermine the health of the heart. A strong need to control others or your environment influences the health of the sexual area of your body. Caroline also discusses in depth why people do not heal and the reasons why we often find ourselves in difficult circumstances that never seem to change.

I read this reluctantly, at the urging of a friend. I read it concurrently with other books, breaking it into little chunks. While the author's concepts of spirit and the way it is reflected in various religions is intriguing, I think she tends to over-simplify many of the concepts, and down-right misconstrues others. It was a fairly interesting read, but not the type of book I care to read often. ( )

Myss explores and explains the chakras, drawing parallels to the 7 Sacraments. This is an excellent resource for anyone commited to healing themselves. Highly recommended as a read-through and as a continuing resource. ( )

i could rave forever about this book. the author is a medical intuitive (someone who can read someone's energy and determine their illness). she explores seven sacred truths and how each truth is related to a specific chakra, sacrament and tree of life. it was really interesting the way she weaves all of the spiritual information from different traditions to distill universal truths. the case histories were astounding. the first part of the book she gives her history, how she discovered her gift and the journey she has taken from the early days to the present. then each chapter focuses on one chakra. she delves deeply into the energy of each chakra and how it relates to its corresponding sacrament/tree of life and at the end of each chapter are self-examination questions. it was such an enlightening and life-changing book. she says our biography is our biology and we can't separate our spirits from our bodies or from our experiences. every experience, thought, emotion is stored in our energy, in our spirit and can create blocks, which are the source of our illnesses and dis-ease. this book is a successful call for awakening, since more often than not healers cannot teach and teachers cannot heal.

This is a must read for anyone interested in spirituality, the chakras, energy healing. Catherine Myss is a mystic, a medical intuitive and an entertaining writer. She opens up a fascinating view of the energetic information stored in the different chakras and how we move through various stages of personal growth. I have read this book several times. It's also great to listen to her CD series "Energy Anatomy" which is based on the principles of this book. ( )

This book and the audiotapes on the same subject had a lasting effect on my life. I have continued to revisit her works, and always I understand more from her. I am impressed by the truth she finds common to all major faith traditions and our biological and psychological realities. ( )

This book has given me great insight on personal growth and the relation between the spirit, the body and energy. It is very easy to read, with concrete examples and lots of questions that allow personal evaluation. It doesn't matter what your faith is, there is something that will speak to everyone ( )

What sets Anatomy of the Spirit apart is Carolyn Myss's ability to blend diverse religious and spiritual beliefs into a succinct discussion of health and human anatomy. For example, when describing the seven energy fields of the human body, she fuses Christian sacraments with Hindu chakras and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life. Fortunately, Myss is a skilled writer as well as researcher, able to ground her extensive spiritual and religious discussions by using real-life stories and a tight writing style. Those who are squeamish with the notion of biography affecting biology will find this book a struggle (in one chapter, Myss links pancreatic cancer with a man's refusal to unburden his life and start fulfilling his dreams). Many, however, hail Myss for creating a valuable contribution to the ongoing exploration of spirituality and health. --Gail Hudson
