Loading... The End of Ozby Danielle Paige3.5/5 ( ) Full Review on my blog! Let me first start with saying that the series is a roller coaster of emotions perfectly twisted together to form a lovely book series! The End of Oz was a beautiful end to this series! This time we also get a point of view from Dorothy, and she’s something else! I loved the dual perspectives in this book, showing us a whole new side to Dorothy. I especially appreciated the way we saw events from both Amy and Dorothy’s point of view, and seeing them both figure things out and watch everything click into place was just so satisfying. It amazed me how well Danielle managed to create such a distinction between Amy and Dorothy’s voices, while showing us just how similar they were at the same time. Amy Gumm is going to be added to my list of bad ass favorite female protagonists. And she is also one of the few protagonists that didn’t annoy me ONCE the entire series. Danielle Paige wrote such a beautiful and relatable character. Her personality was consistent but her growth throughout every book was astonishing. She had her dark moments and she had her good moments and through it all I liked her. Honestly, character development in general, in this series is insane, and watching all the characters change and mature over the course of the 4 books was such a lovely experience. Each character has their own voice, personality, and background enabling you to submerge yourself into their lives. The book picks up right where the 3rd book ended, when Amy, Nox and Madison escaped on the yellow brick road. Yes, I know… Madison is with them! In the book 3, Yellow Brick Road, Madison and Amy make up and are new best friends! Madison was an old enemy of Amy’s but got pulled into Oz when the Nome King opened a portal into their high school to get Dorothy’s first pair of shoes. The yellow brick road takes them to an old enemy of Nox’s, her name is Lanadel, they have a complicated past and I’m going to be honest Nox was a terrible person in the past. It takes them a while to convince Lanadel to help them. Meanwhile the Nome King and Dorothy have planned to get married, I know what you’re thinking, two powerful, evil people getting married, this CANT HAPPEN D: But the wedding is something else, the Nome King is up to something for sure (not gonna spoil that :p) but Dorothy finds out through her new servant. Meanwhile Dorothy is planning the wedding, Madison, Amy, Nox, and Lanadel acquire an invitation to the wedding, which is a masquerade party. Even though it’s a masquerade party Dorothy knows Amy is there and uses her presence as a way for her to escape. A big battle happens and Amy is stuck choosing between Nox and saving Oz, how unfair is that?! Amy of course being such a good-hearted person chooses to save Oz and move back to Kansas. Amy is back to her normal life but now has a friend (Madison) and they go back to class as seniors. But of course there’s a small twist at the end which is soooo *heart-eyes*, you’ll have to read the series to find out though! Honestly, this series is amazing and so unique you have to check it out and give it a chance! I highly recommend it! Check out my reviews of the rest of this series! Dorothy Must Die The Wicked Will Rise Yellow Brick War The End of Oz _____________________________ Blog | Instagram | Twitter | Tumblr | Facebook | Store It starts off alright (compared to the others in the series, not books in general) but the final third does not do justice to the story. The author spends more time in character-introspection than in describing the scenes or battles. The final battle is relatively quick and unexciting in comparison with battles of earlier books. And of course it ends exactly as one would expect. Boring happily ever after. Though I felt that the entire series was a great idea and the first book really set a great tone of a twisted take on the original story. The other three books started a downward spiral of what was a dark and horrifying great tale , into a typical YA romance filled story. Not excited about how it finished !! This fourth book is the culmination of the series Dorothy Must Die. The yellow brick road is taking Amy and her companions on a ride to the land of Ev where the Nome King rules. Amy and her cohorts must bring an end to the Nome King and also to Dorothy who has survived events of the last book only to create more menace. I was mildly disappointed in this last book of the series. I know that I am looking at the story from an adult viewpoint and may be somewhat more critical of the plot than the age appropriate reader might be. Since this book was meant to be the end of the series, should it have ended with a cliffhanger that didn't really tie up all of the loose ends but created more of them? Additionally, the title itself was somewhat deceptive. Was it really the End of Oz? THE END OF OZ picks up right where YELLOW BRICK WAR left off. We find Amy, Nox, and Madison flying on the Yellow Brick Road to… somewhere. When the road dumps them in the land of Ev, Amy has to forge new alliances, navigate her strained relationship with Madison, and maybe, finally, kill Dorothy. I loved the first and second book of this series, was a little underwhelmed by the third, and had high hopes for the fourth. It’s not that it’s a terrible book, I just think I expected more out of it than was actually delivered. Danielle Paige is a beautiful, sweet person but it felt like she was little bored of her own story by the end of this book. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the book. Amy is one of my favorite book heroines. I love the fact that Paige talks about poverty and addiction in her books and how it impacted Amy’s life and the way she views things even in Oz. I was also pleasantly surprised that Amy and Madison have an actual conversation about why Madison was so awful to Amy- and that Amy didn’t let Madison weasel out of not explaining herself. I enjoyed the progression of Amy and Nox’s relationship. It was 3 books coming and I loved seeing their ending. But the book ending? Woo, boy. While I can appreciate the ending with Dorothy, the rest of it felt like a cheap copout. And I have so many unanswered questions. Which makes me wonder… is this really the end of Oz? Paige definitely left the door wide open for another book but I’m not sure my love for Oz could survive another one. Again, it’s not a terrible book. Just go in expecting some fairly good scenes with a lot of ‘eh’ in between. At first, I was very satisfied by the ending of this. There are quite a few YA series out there that try to preserve the innocence of the heroine by taking self-determination out of their hands and disallowing them to confront/kill the big bad. This allowed Amy to retain her (relative) innocence WITHOUT taking Dorothy's defeat away from her. Awesomesauce! And then in the great will-they/won't-they relationship BS with her and Nox she made the anti-relationship choice (another first for YA!!!)...and then everything with that was thrown out the window. And in he major Oz=Home/Kansas=Home debate, Amy made the unexpected, less fantasy choice and it was great...until, once again, the great writer of words decided "You know what? Fuck it. Amy gets everything. She gets her mom AND Nox. She get Kansas AND Oz." Fuck that. There need to be REAL choices and REAL consequences to choices. Yeah, you get your happy ending, perfectly wrapped up with the pretty little bow, but it's NOT satisfying. It's lame and masturbatory. Literary Merit: Good Characterization: Good Recommended: Yes if you have the other books in the series. Level: 9-12 I adore the Dorothy Must Die series so I really did enjoy this book. I believed it was a great addition to the series. Amy is as feisty as ever and she gets SUPER close with Nox in this book. If you liked the other books you will be pleasantly surprised. I felt like it was a little formulaic in places and that is why it isn't getting a higher star count from me. So, for me this wasn't my favorite book in the series, that still goes to Dorothy must die. However, I did like Langwidere A LOT. I thought she was a strong, feisty, bad ass female. It was nice to be in a different setting (Ev instead of Oz). I just found the chapters from Dorothy's POV to be really annoying. I think that's how the author meant them to be, so more power to her. Overall I give this book 4 out of 5 stars and I would recommend this book and series (Though with the prequel novellas it does get really long.) This book was definitely unexpected but a great surprise. I'm not sure I liked reading from Dorothy's point of view. I've spent the last three books despising her and but I have to say she is completely delusional and twisted in a sadistic kind of way. This really wasn't the ending I'd hoped for but I think it leaves the door open for another sequel. Amy is wonderfully, wickedly good and she deserves an uncomplicated happily ever after. |
