This book has been stuck in my head for many years and I really want to know the title.

I did not read this book, but heard a review from a classmate in 1994, so it's an older Sci-Fi book.

From what I remember - there was a group of teenagers that got trapped in some sort of world with stairs, perhaps glass stairs?

It reminded me of the movie, "Cube" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_(film) where they would go up one stairs and find another set of stairs that seems to keep on going forever. They have to figure out the puzzle and be able to reach the end and get out of there.

I remember on the cover was a picture of stairs going up and seeming to vanish when it's near the top of the book. On the bottom is a group of teens (4 or 5) is standing, looking upward the stairs.

Hope someone kind of remembers this book...it's one of those books that has been bugging me for years, but I can't put my finger on it.

My guess would be House of Stairs by William Sleator.

I think that's the book posted about the most often here too... it's amusing.

I've never read House of stairs; in fact I've never read anything by Sleator. But when I saw this thread's title, it immediately reminded me of exactly that book. Only because it gets requested so often...

I too support the guess of Sleator. He seems to be good at doing this kind of vivid imagery which is easy to remember even if you forget the title...

I think there should be a sticky "read this first" post, allowing people to rule out the following books before they post a query:

House of Stairs
From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
The Changeover

I think we'd cut out a fair number of posts :)

^^ Let's also add the short story "All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury to that list, shall we? :-D

I support the creation of such a list (though it will make the posting instructions even more top-heavy than they are now). Seems a perfect addition to this group's wiki page.

And let's add a link to the story while we're at it. Here's a direct link to a word document (though I'm unsure how legal this is); and here's the site where you can find that document (type the title into the search window, top right corner). Both links through Wikipedia.

Other links maybe to ABE or Amazon?

Maybe also "A Sound of Thunder" by Bradbury?

>8 Petroglyph::
I was being cheeky, Petroglyph, but a list of commonly asked about books would be a good addition to the group wiki now that I think about it...

Wow! The names sounds familiar, I now remember about orphans, so it *has* to be the book! Thanks!!

I'm just surprised that it's one of the most requested books. I didn't think anyone would answer it because it seem like an older story and doesn't seem very popular. Boy was I wrong. :-)

Someone SHOULD make a sticky of the most requested books "Name that Book" with descriptions.

Thanks again...
