Just starting Karl Friday's Hired Swords: Rise of Private Warrior Power in Early Japan
I've read Friday's Samurai, Warfare and the State in Early Medieval Japan and am looking forward to his exploration of the origins and development of the highly trained, specialist private security forces which were instigated by the central government.
I'm especially curious to see if the seeds of the samurai's dominance over the central government in later years were planted or obvious early on.

Ditto that. Right now I'm reading fiction and general history, but the next military history book up will likely be White Eagles.

This week I'm finishing up George Washington and Benedict Arnold: A Tale of Two Patriots, by Dave Palmer. I can't say it's been terribly exciting. I haven't found too many of these parallel biographies that have added much to what I already know or that I could not learn more completely in other works. After this it's on to Sam Harris's Letter to A Christian Nation and The Alchemist by Paul Coelho

I'm reading Armageddon by Max Hastings. He doesn't exactly break new ground but it is well written and his pithy judgements of the commanders is enjoyable.
