It's Time to Sleep, My Love (edition 2008)by Nancy Tillman (Author), Eric Metaxas (Author), Nancy Tillman (Illustrator)Yet another beautifully illustrated book by Nancy Tillman I think I've read all of the books in this series, and this completes the goal of completion. I've often said that I cannot draw a straight line with a ruler, and therefore when I see such lush illustrations, I am in awe. As the title notes, this is a story of adult animals, softly repeating the same phrase in order to bring about sleep. As with all this artist's books, the illustations carry the story. It's Time to Sleep, My Love, is a beautiful book that prepares little ones for bed time. With stunning illustrations created digitally using a variety of software painting programs, water color, pencil, and chalk, this books soothing text and calming pages will have even adults ready for sleep. As children prepare for bed, the world around them is also settling down for a good nights sleep. This juvenile fiction book takes readers on a beautiful journey through the quiet night were these sweet words are whispered "It's time to sleep my love". A precious book that will fill your heart with love and get you ready to dream. In this soothing bedtime book from author Eric Metaxas and illustrator Nancy Tillman, a gentle rhyming text - "The songbirds sing in trees above, / It's time to sleep, my love, my love... / So go to sleep, my sleepy child, / the tiger whispers in the wild" - is paired with somewhat surreal mixed media artwork, that successfully evokes a dreamlike landscape. Sleepiness - feeling sleepy, gently commanding that the listener "go to sleep" - is repeatedly invoked in the narrative, which also emphasizes the enfolding nature of a parent's love. Nancy Tillman is a name that one immediately associates with early "reassurance" type picture-books - her On the Night You Were Born seems to have been very well received - and I somehow had the idea that she was the author here, rather than Eric Metaxas. Perhaps because it is her name listed at the top? In any case, I appreciated It's Time to Sleep, My Love, even though its style of artwork - digitally created, and then embellished with textural elements - isn't really my 'cup of tea,' because I think it succeeds as a sleepy-time book. |
