Marvel's Voices: Indigenous Voices (2020) #1 (Marvel's Voices (2020-2021)) (edition 2020)by Jeffrey Veregge (Author), Rebecca Roanhorse (Author), Darcie Little Badger (Author), Stephen Graham Jones (Author), Jim Terry (Cover Art) — 4 more, Jeffrey Veregge (Artist), Rebecca Roanhorse (Artist), Darcie Little Badger (Artist), Stephen Graham Jones (Artist)This was a fun collection of essentially graphic short stories. However, they were very short, and since I didn't already know the characters it felt like there was a lot of context missing. I am glad this was written and drawn by indigenous artists and authors, but it still feels like a token gesture on Marvel's part. (I hope I'm wrong. I hope it's more than a token. That's just the impression I get.) I really loved Veregge's art in the intro "The Watcher". "Echo: Hitting Back" made me want to know more about that character, and I liked the tie-in to the larger mutant universe in "Mirage: Multifaceted". "Silver Fox: Blue Moon" wasn't as much to my taste, and felt like I was missing some context. I had no idea there were so many Native American / First Nations characters in Marvel Comics! |
