Short biography
The first woman to run for president of the U.S. in 1872, the flamboyant Victoria C. Woodhull also ran a successful stock brokerage with her sister Tennessee Claflin (1845-1923) and founded a women's rights magazine. Having publicly revealed the affair between Henry Ward Beecher and his parishioner Elizabeth Tilney, the sisters had to move to England in 1877. They were eventually received by society, married, and continued to publish.
