Winston was much better known as the translator, together with his wife Clara, of Thomas Mann and other giants of German literature. It was interesting to see what he could do as an author, and the result is very much worth reading.

Amazing amount of history in this book. Hard to believe so much was documented in what used to be called the dark ages. The age was not dark just not roman.

A very well written history of Charlemagne and the impact his reign had on the Western World.

A biography of the first half of Thomas Mann's life by one of the great translators of German literature. It is the first biography to draw on Mann's private diaries. Winston's portrayal is a readable study focusing on the literary and psychological development of Thomas Mann.
