Short biography
Johanna Spyri was born Johanna Louise Heusser in Switzerland, the fourth of six children of a village doctor and his wife. Her rural home was at the foot of the Alps, just south of Zürich. As a child, she spent several summers in the area around Chur in Graubünden, a setting she would later use in her writing. She was tutored at home, attended the local school, then studied languages and piano in Zürich. In 1852, she married Bernhard Spyri, a lawyer, with whom she had a son. The couple moved to a home in Zürich overlooking the lake where she wrote her first novel, A Leaf on Vrony's Grave (1871), published anonymously when she was 43 years old. Based on its success, she became a prolific author of works for adults and children. Her book Heidi's Apprenticeship Years (1880) was so popular that she produced a followup, Heidi Uses what She Has Learned (1881). Together, the two works make up the novel now called simply Heidi— the work for which she is remembered today.

Omg. Surprisingly enchanting and accessible, and less twee and saccharine than expected.

Ok, as far as I recall, I've never actually read this before. I do love the art of [a:Tomi Ungerer|72770|Tomi Ungerer|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1312191534p2/72770.jpg] so when I had a chance to pick up a copy of this edition, ISBN 0385302444, I thought it'd be fun. And, once I realized that Ungerer was doing an entirely different kind of work than I've seen before, and got used to it, I loved it.

Now I did have a thrill of recognition at the very beginning, in which Dete has Heidi wearing all her dresses, no matter how hot the child, to avoid carrying them. And then the toasted cheese and hearty bread and fresh goats' milk for dinner, and the bit about saving soft white rolls for the grandmother, and the sleepwalking... but most of the rest of the book was not familiar, so I don't know if I saw a film of this or did read it before.

In any case, I am glad I read this, and not just for the illustrations. The story is worth reading. It's quite similar to the even better [b:The Secret Garden|231815|The Secret Garden|Frances Hodgson Burnett|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1442934240l/231815._SX50_.jpg|3186437] (one of my all-time favorites) but (at the very least) the fascinating Alpine & Frankfurt settings make it worth reading for its own sake.

I do have to mention that I'm surprised how stupid Peter is presented to be in the book. I think that could be a point of discussion for a family or classroom.

I do have to say that the story is very Christian, but not in a way that is too bothersome, in my atheistic opinion. I almost approve of the way the grandmamma explains why one should pray even if the prayers are not answered, as summarized: "He will help you at the right time, only be trustful!" Otoh, if the story were Bowdlerized to remove all Christian references, it would still be wonderful. The mountains, the wilderness, the fresh air, the simple life - those are what help Heidi continue to be the joyful and generous child she is, and help everyone else learn from her example how to truly live with health and contentment....

Peter rearranged the reading a little so that it would not be too difficult for him. If a word came that was too long or looked hard, he chose to leave it out.... So it came about that there were hardly any nouns left in the hymns Peter read.

This book told the story of the of Gritli, a devoted mother, and her children as they live a hard but wholesome life in rural Switzerland. It's been 50 years since I've read Heidi, but this book seems awfully similar/familiar. Bit too sugary for me. 86 page

Orphaned at an early age and taken in by her young aunt Dete, Heidi--short for Adelheid--is soon in the way. Dete has a new and better job where Heidi is not welcome, so the child must live with her curmudgeon of a grandfather high on the Alm Mountain in the Swiss Alps.

Everyone calls him the Alm-Uncle because he never comes down to the village, even in the coldest winter, and he's developed a reputation as an evil, godless old hermit. But Heidi soon finds that things are not always what others say they are, makes friends with the Alm-Uncle, and happily runs wild in the glorious mountains with the goat boy, Peter, and his goats.

Suddenly Dete appears again, and Heidi finds herself confined in a stone house in a stone city where she is expected to be companion to the invalid Klara. Dete sees this as a great opportunity for Heidi, one that will provide her with an education and polish. But, bitterly unhappy away from her grandfather and the outdoor life she has grown to love, Heidi at last makes her way back to the Alm. How Klara finally comes to the mountains as well, and the surprising events that follow, form the heartwarming ending to a story that has been loved for generations by children all over the world.
