Short biography
Timothy D. Snyder was born in the Midwest and received his Bachelor of Arts in European history and political science from Brown University. He then became a British Marshall Scholar at Oxford University, where he completed his doctorate in 1997.

He has held fellowships at the Centre Nationale des Recherches Scientifiques, Paris (1994-1995); the Harvard University’s Olin Institute for Strategic Studies (1997); served as an Academy Scholar at Harvard’s Center for International Affairs (1998-2001); and has held multiple fellowships at the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen in Vienna.

At Yale, he teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in modern eastern European political history and graduate seminars on the Holocaust, on Eastern European history as global history, and on the dynamics of international crisis in European political history. Among his numerous publications are six single-authored award-winning books: Nationalism, Marxism, and Modern Central Europe: A Biography of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz (1998); The Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1659-1999 (2003); Sketches from a Secret War: A Polish Artist’s Mission to Liberate Soviet Ukraine (2005); The Red Prince: The Secret Lives of a Habsburg Archduke (2008); and Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin (2010). In 2017 he published On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.

Snyder's Yale University course on 'The Making of Modern Ukraine', filmed in 2022 over 23 classes and made available to the public as a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is available on YouTube.

One of the most overlooked aspects of this book is simply its size. It is a small format book, designed to replicate those pocket US Constitutions that some people love to whip out and wave in your face, typically when they are trying to defend their right to open carry a rocket launcher. But that format similarity is also to say that this is the book that every US student should be made to study along with the Constitution, because it details how appallingly vulnerable the US system is to an authoritarian takeover. That should not be news at this point in time, but large parts of the US population, including many liberals, still don't get it. If I started pulling out my favorite quotes form his book I would never stop, so I won't. Instead, just buy it, read it, learn from it, and put it into practice. Most importantly, learn lesson 1 (I'm looking at you Washington Post and LA Times): don't obey in advance.… (more)

A horrifying look at the US health system, via Snyder's own awful experience. Admittedly things had been missed by hospitals in other countries too, but in comparison to that in the US hospitals, the care he got in Vienna for example (and during his wife's pregnancy when they lived there), painful, and he had reasonable insurance, so for those who don't, life expectancy is much lower. Hopefully Obama care has improved this some, but as commercial businesses, he doesn't believe the patient is ever the priority.

I should say that he has nothing but gratitude for the healthcare workers who did their best despite the serious limitations.

He also talks about how T'rump mishandled the pandemic, leaving everyone hanging in the wind. Boris wasn't much better, and definitely too many lives were lost by his lack of early response despite advice.

I'm sure some if you will have experiences that either support or challenge this. Our own system is crumbling, with over 60,000 healthcare professionals in counselling post the pandemic. For the first time in decades our life expectancy has stopped increasing, and may be going in the other direction.

This is certainly an important topic and numerous points made, but I didn't enjoy the flow of the writing. Still glad I gave it a look.

This short book by Timothy Snyder is brilliant. The lessons are clear, and it is up to us to imbibe them and implement them. I like the book because it is short and pithy, with no words wasted. Many authors may have given in to the temptation to write a long tome with many examples. In such cases, the lessons get buried underneath mountains of word salad.
I am glad Timothy Snyder did not give in to the temptation: the book is better.
And hey, if you want to buy the book, buy the illustrated edition!… (more)
