This book would be best for lower elementary. It is about a girl who really wants a new coat and how she comes to get one for Christmas. This book does a great job of providing specific information about the Sioux people. It is also set in a modern context with characters wearing modern clothes and taking part in common activities.

This book would be great for older audiences such as 5th grade.

This book is about a young girl who lives in a Sioux community. At the girl's school, they hand out fur coats for the cold temperatures. The girl has to pick her coat last, and ends up not getting what she wanted! But, at the end of the book, the girl's mother ends up getting her the perfect fur winter coat.

This book reflects the idea of diversity well on the list of 'What to Look For' because it highlights the Sioux tribe.… (more)

This book would be a good book for ages 3rd-5th. In this book, Virginia has outgrown her winter coat and is waiting for the drive of coats to come to the reservation. She always gets the last pick but on Christmas, her mother surprises her with a wonderful coat.

This book does a really good job of showing positive images. Virginia and her family are very selfless people which makes it very hard for Virginia and she rarely gets new things. But because she is so kind and a positive role model her mother treats her this Christmas.… (more)

This picture book is a story from the author's own life about a christmas when she was a child. Her family had taught her to put others needs before her own and as a child it can be really hard to see that. I think that this book would be good to have in primary classrooms as it teaches empathy towards others. in addition to the story, the illustrations can help break down negative stereotypes about indigenous people and their experiences
