- Françoise Sagan was an "enfant terrible" of post-World War II French literature. She published her first novel in 1954, when she was 18 years old, and became as famous for her flamboyant lifestyle as for her writing.

Bonjour Tristesse: A Novel by Françoise Sagan

This definitely tasted like champagne. I loved the aesthetic of this book, the images of the French Riviera still linger in my mind. I will say that it seemed like Sagan was going for a much more mature tone than I anticipated. It's a bildungsroman surrounding a tragedy brought on by the protagonist, but something about it all felt out of place, the tone didn't quite match up to the plot. Maybe it was just the translation.
Bonjour Tristesse was a melodrama that somehow felt incredibly real. Obsessed with the way the author depicted familial relationships.
A Certain Smile: I don't think this is a popular opinion but I liked this one better, probably because I was able to connect with the material *slightly* more. It's a very ordinary story about falling in love and getting your heart shattered for the first time but told extraordinarily and with a great deal of compassion. Love will absolutely devastate you and rewire your brain but the pain is temporary and Paris is forever.… (more)
