An interesting read and a thoughtful look at gender stereotypes. Liz's story occupies a unique niche in that the entire book revolves around her struggle to gain a sense of identity, and yet she never once questions her sexual preference. For as much as her story felt familiar, that aspect made it refreshing. I enjoyed the tone, both in art and dialogue, with which she narrates, although it does feel a trifle repetitive in places. I wish she would have spent a little more time in her teenage years, when she goes through her most dramatic transformation. Language and one or two other things keeps it off the middle school shelf for me, but I think it's ideal for high school.… (more)

teen/adult graphic memoir (rejecting societal expectations of females, unrequited crushes, bullying, growing up in Santa Fe, New Mexico)

skilled graphic storytelling with thought-provoking perspective, I can definitely see why this book keeps coming up in all the best lists.

This reads exactly like an actual episode of Clarence - and that's all I wanted from it. It's a typical Clarence/Jeff/Sumo adventure with wacky little hijinks, an eyeroll from Mary, and adorable illustrations that will make you say "OHMYGAWSH!" If you like the show you'll have fun reading this. :)

Torn between 3 and 4 stars, because I liked it, but I didn't really like it. It does a lot of interesting things, but I was pretty weirded out by sections of it -- I'm really not the target audience for this in a lot of ways.

Also, I struggled a lot with the art style - the simple line drawing was great for a lot of the time, but the font choice frequently made me dizzy.

Overall, I appreciated that the author is quite candid about being heterosexual, cisgender, and gender non-conforming, and that these are things that can go together. And loved the specific details of negotiating with the Catholic school principal to be allowed to wear button shirt and tie rather than dress to mass.… (more)
