The introduction to Erin and the world she found herself in really really dragged, and the writing wasn't great, but the action and pacing picked up once she started meeting new people and figured out a direction to take her life in, plus the author's writing seemed to improve. There was no hint in the synopsis, but I would say that this was more of a two-person POV between Erin and Ryoka (a Runner), rather than Erin exclusively.

4-stars for the main POV plots following Erin, Ryoka, Laken, and Lyonette's redemption arc, but I could have done without the side stories following:

1. Pawn and his Christian preaching
2. the apocalyptic zombieville (even if I did cry at the ending)
3. the lookback into Pisces's and Celia's days at Wistram - the pacing dragged a lot

I'm not sure how exactly these volumes were bundled and organized, but I think I would have preferred that all these stories were put at the very end or another book altogether so I could skip them easily or read them some other time.… (more)

The main Erin storyline is still by far my favorite - the rest of it ended up rather grim, although I can appreciate the deep world- and character-building. I was tempted to skip some chapters, but the completionist in me didn't want to miss any details if it was sequentially presented to me, so I slogged through stories with Garen's history with the Halfseekers, the Goblin tribe drama, etc.

Laken was one of my favorite characters in previous volumes, but he was such an ass for most of the book. >:( I hope he redeems himself in future volumes.

It was exciting to see most of the stories finally meet up, and some of the deaths were quite tragic. ;_; Pisces has a lot of explain, and I hope that any backstabbing due to his Necromancer master isn't too evil. :(

Ryoka unfortunately wasn't featured in this volume at all until the last chapter - I hope we find out what she's been up to soon.

My first venture into litrpg. Took about 10 or 15 chapters to start appreciating it but now I'm hooked. Entertaining light read. A bit clunky at times but pacing overcomes that.
