The third Wrexford and Sloane Victorian mystery cuts close to home when Charlotte's cousin is murdered, and his twin is arrested for the crime. Charlotte knows her cousin is innocent and asks Wrexford for his help in clearing her cousin's name.

Ther investigation may force Charlotte to throw off part of her anonymity and regain her place in society if she is to have the entree needed to investigate a couple of women who might have answers about the crime.

Meanwhile, Wrexford is trying to learn more about the victim who was somehow involved in the scientific investigations of the date. Electricity and the possible reanimation of the dead are subjects of scientific investigation and Charlotte's cousin was involved.

I love the historical detail in this series. I also love the growing relationship between Wrexford and Charlotte.

I received this book as am ARC from the publisher. This novel is part of a series, but you do not need to read the entire series in order to follow this book. The story reads as an old timey cozy mystery. At times it was difficult to follow what was happening as there are a lot of characters and a lot of talk about bridge design and mathematics. The main characters: Wrexford and Charlotte are both kind hearted and intelligent. Their perseverance for the truth helps solve the murder of their friend's cousin. The story itself has enough red herrings to keep it interesting, but not push it over the top. This was an enjoyable read and I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for other books in this series.… (more)

Lady Arianna and Lord Saybrook are still on the trail of Renard, the fox, French spy and supporter of Napoleon. They go to Scotland looking for a tie between the University chemists, a new explosive and the French spy ring. This then sends them back to London and the Royal Institution. Some new people are drawn into their team and some existing members get temporarily sidelined. Arianna ends up using a couple of her disguises to get close to potential sources. Another action packed historical mystery that ties together all the loose ends to solve the case. Each chapter again begins with a chocolate recipe. Very enjoyable series.… (more)
