Impulse based on the cover. Wow. So glad I didn't read any spoilers here first. It's got an intergenerational friendship, a kids v. the developers, and a several other themes. And it's so honest about how Saint copes with her mom working so many hours. It's also got some implausibilities, but they pale compared to the heart truths.

And the humor!
"The apple fell so far from the tree it rolled to the other side of the world and somehow became an orange."
"Life is filled with What-If Dragons. I'm here to slay them."

And it's ok that we don't know what Saint imagined, what was real, whether she's going to be happier now.... Life doesn't tidily end at the end of the story....

I do recommend doing what I did, which is read it again immediately after the first time. It's short, and, yeah, full of spoilerable stuff that you'll want to understand better after you turn the last page.

Another fun and funny, strange and silly collection of Pearls Before Swine comic strips by Stephan Pastis. The Pearls treasuries, like The Crass Menagerie, are particularly wonderful because they contain commentary from Pastis. I find most interesting the strips and jokes that offend readers. Crass, like other volumes, contains some exquisitely groanworthy puns. The inept, slow-witted crocs continue to be my favorite characters. Pearls is a wonderful strip.

Pearls Before Swine is a newspaper daily comic and contains, among a multitude of truly terrifically terrible puns, the ongoing adventures of a cohabitating rat and pig. The pig is a true cloud-cuckoo-lander and the rat the biting cynical curmudgeon who lives within us all. On no account should you listen to anyone who tells you newspaper comics are dead.

Stephen Pastis' Pearls Before Swine is a very funny comic strip. I particularly enjoy the treasuries, including Lions and Tigers and Crocs, Oh My! because of Pastis' commentary that accompanies some of the strips; it's fascinating to learn the motivations and inspirations behind some of the cartoons, and some of the strips that garnered letters of complaint. My favorite characters continue to be those demented crocs; they bust me up.
