Deluxe Book Merging Music & Architecture
Review of the ArchiTangle hardcover edition (2020)
Writing about music is like dancing about architecture. - variously attributed to Frank Zappa, Elvis Costello, Martin Mull a.o.

Despite the contradictions presented by the above infamous quote, A Common Denominator overcomes any doubts about whether an architectural building can act as an avatar for the musical works of a composer. The Spanish firm Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos designed a superb structure that embodies the world famous composer's life and work and now ArchiTangle Publishers have created a beautiful work of art in a book that captures both the spirit of the building and the music of the composer.

A Common Denominator is simultaneously a minimalist and simple "coffee table" book and a complex and intricate construction presenting 5 different views of the recently built Arvo Pärt Centre (2018) in Estonia. The Centre acts as the archive of the Estonian composer's work while also functioning as a concert hall for chamber music performances, an exhibition space and areas for study and contemplation.

The oversized (11" by 11" or 28 cm by 28 cm) hardcover book contains a generous selection of photographs of the Centre, essays by various contributors, excerpts from the Arvo Pärt composition "In Principio" from drafts to final score, architectural drawings (on translucent paper pages) and aphorisms by the composer. A sample view of the book can be seen at the publisher ArchiTangle's website, see the video under the tab Look Inside.

The lavish and beautiful photographs are from several photographers but are dominated by those of Roland Halbe. A selection of those can be viewed at Halbe's website (may require extra downloading time) or at this article Arvo Pärt Centre, the Principle that Structures Musical Composition.

Trivia
The book is a quadrilingual publication with the bound text containing Estonian and English and an accompanying pamphlet with Spanish and German translations.
