Short biography
[from Marshmallow, 2010 edition]
Clare Turlay Newberry (1903-1970) was born in Eugene, Oregon. She studied art at the University of Oregon, the School of the Portland Art Museum, the California School of Fine Arts, and La Grand Chaumière in Paris, France. She received the Caldecott Honor for four of her books: T-Bone, the Baby-Sitter (1951); Marshmallow (1943); April's Kittens (1941); and Barkis (1939).

In Ms. Newberry's own words, "Every word of Marshmallow is true, even to the drawing of them wrapped in each other's arms. I know people find this hard to believe, but the bunny was so little and was so convinced that Oliver was his mother, what could Oliver do but be his mother the best way he could?"

I'm not sure that my kids need the suggestion of a pet for a birthday present. In any event this early Caldecott honoree mostly shows how far picture books have come both in illustration and narrative from the 1930's. Pictures are reminiscent of a figure drawing manual and the story is a little disconcerting.

Most modern children will think it's too young for them (if they're 'just turned 9) or too long (if they're getting picturebooks read to them). But I would have loved it when I was little. Nothing much happens, but a little slice of life is captured perfectly, and the sentimental drawings are adorable.

This book belonged to Kate when she was little. It was one of the books Ted wanted me to read because it was a favorite of the Panofsky's.

This is a great tale of the love of a little girl for her cat and kittens.
