- Azadeh Moaveni is Tehran correspondent for TIME Magazine. She is the author of Lipstick Jihad (2005), and co-author of Iran Awakening (2006).
She previously worked for the Los Angeles Times as a reporter covering the Iraq war, and its regional reverberations. Before joining the Times, she reported around the Middle East for TIME, covering Islamic militant groups, Arab media, political Shiism, Arab/Iranian youth culture, and the Iranian reform movement. As one of the few American correspondents permitted to work continuously in Iran since 1999, Azadeh has reported extensively on youth culture and the student movement in the Islamic Republic. This focus inspired her first book, as well as her contributions to two anthologies, My Sister, Guard Your Veil; My Brother, Guard Your Eyes (2006), and Let Me Tell You Where I’ve Been (2006).

I rarely get through a work of nonfiction, but this book was one I could not put down. Moaveni is so honest in her portrayal of her struggles with life straddling two separate and often opposing cultures. Her explanations of the complexities of life in modern Iran were eye-opening, to say the least. I am officially very, very interested in the world she inhabits. A seriously great book.

This is a compelling and fascinating account of the lives of a number or women who either joined or tried to join ISIS in Syria. It’s surprisingly gripping, often very moving, even-handed and endlessly illuminating. The stories are well chosen, complex political and religious concepts are clearly explained and the writing is almost beautiful at times.
It seems to me that the lure of extremism is one of those subjects that’s both important and rarely taking about. Azadeh Moaveni absolutely does it justice.

I admire Shirin Ebadi not only her courage, but especially for the enormous amount of care and work she did while being both a Muslim housewife and mother and an activist lawyer. Her opinions are well founded, intelligent and compassionate. She doesn't brag about herself even though she has good reason to. This book is a must read if you want to understand the situation in Iran.
