One of the most solid horror anthologies available--and, having read dozens of them over the decades, I know whereof I speak. From the sublime (the existential horror of Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge") to the ridiculous ("The Monster of Lake LaMetrie," a mad scientist misadventure by Wardon Allan Curtis), from canonical classics ("Pickman's Model" by H.P. Lovecraft; "The Horsehair Trunk" by Davis Grubb) to more recent masterpieces (Carl Jacobi's "The Unpleasantness at Carver House"; Tom Reamy's "Twilla"; Jeffrey Goddin's "The Smell of Cherries"), all tastes are catered for. A Treasury of American Horror Stories belongs in your permanent collection.… (more)

Collection of ghosts stories from the south. The one that sticks with me the most is the first one from Orson Scott Card in which his oldest son has a bunch of imaginary friends who come to visit for Christmas. Another thing that I found surprising is the use of the N word in this anthology. But reviewing the original publication dates on the stories many of them are pre or early 1900. Shows how times have changed. Very likable book overall though.
