John “Rip” Doolan was near death from wounds and loss of blood. In order to save him his Lord gave him the craving virus, a disease that makes him fast healing but will also puts him in a form of vampirism. For the last 6 months he has been learning how to control his hunger. Prior to all this he and Esme had been close to courting, but now Rip fears he will hurt her if he makes her his thrall (one who willingly gives him blood). Esme and Rip go through a series of misunderstandings getting this sorted out. At the same time a human blood drainer, Bill Higgins, is kidnapping humans to drain for profit and attempts to teal Esme. An interesting follow up to Kiss of Steel. The book also contains a short story about Lena and Will, setting the stage for the next novel in the series. Good background info for readers of the series.… (more)
