‘Putting Down Roots’ had me charmed from the beginning. The title alone is intriguing, the characters are interesting, and while I guessed what was going to happen pretty early on, the lyrical writing and beautiful descriptions kept me interested until the very end. I have a feeling the author wanted this to be slightly creepy, but I just couldn’t see that. Yes, these are unusual shifters, but the dangers they face are unique and the way they live their lives is so different from what I am used to from other shifter stories, that about the only thing I wished for was for this story to be longer. Don’t get me wrong, it is perfect the way it is, but sometimes when something great comes along, I can’t but help to want more f it. I guess I am greedy.

If you’re looking for an unusual paranormal read with a touch of mystery and a great ending, then I can recommend this short story. It’s very memorable.

As a collection of stories, I think the 2015 Advent Calendar was one of the best of its kind. I have been following these since 2009, but the number of stories I totally adored has never been this high. And even though I had my ten favorites (see individual titles for my reviews and ratings), I really liked the vast majority of the remainder as well. Each story had something to contribute, and that included (as it does every year) stories of winter traditions other than Christian. I had a ball reading these and already look forward to the 2016 collection.

Ah, superheroes! An excellent spoof on every superhero story ever written, as well as hilariously funny and somewhat sweet, ‘Four Alternative Christmas Presents’ isn’t just entertaining, it also contains a little message about the value of being true to yourself. The idea of alternative realities is nicely, but very loosely, linked to ‘A Christmas Carol’ for a story that made me laugh out loud and smile in turn.

Matt tells the story, and he is a bit of a klutz. Not a good thing for a superhero with superstrength as a power, but even the fact that he has a superpower at all was an accident… To make matters worse, Matt has a crush on his mentor and partner, Jake, who seems less than interested in him. Then the longtime villain Dr. Destructo builds a mysterious machine and Matt and Jack end up being flung from alternate reality to alternate reality until Matt figures out how to solve the problem. The twist that leads to an unexpected ending was a pleasant surprise

If you like superheroes who don’t take themselves too seriously, if you enjoy reading about men who should be together but can’t seem to figure out how to do it, and if you’re looking for a lighthearted read that is as entertaining as it is sweet, then you will probably like this short story.
