A sort of an onion of a book. At first Nellie, age 5, is pure spoiled brat. Then we realize why Olivia, 9, is taking such 'good' care of her. Then as we learn more about the inner lives of the girls, we start to solve the mystery of the Flower Children. Then we think we have solved it... and then there's a sort of an epilogue, that little shoot in the center of a mature bulb.... Can be read on many levels, and reread as a child gets older. Subtle and entertaining both. Highly recommended.

Surprisingly well-done, still interesting though there has been competition. More in group comments. Btw, I greatly prefer the original cover.

In what f'd up world are feral cats the good guys? And how can a cat raise rats for a pet-food cannery, much less do business w/ the canners? And why is 3/4 of the book world-building and 1/4 climax & epilogue, with no actual story? And I guess coyotes would seem awfully scary to outdoor cats, but they needn't have been referenced as if evil. Illustrations are nifty, though.

Gave it 4 stars due to childhood nostalgia, growing up I was a bit of a book nerd (still am obviously) but I remembered this book being one of my childhood favorites. Rereading it now, I can see the issues with this book when it came to scene jumping to another scene out of no where but eventually I got use to it,I suppose that was normal for a children/ young adults book during the 1980’s, who knows really. I still enjoyed the story though and I relate a bit to Sara-Kate’s character a bit even as an adult and I felt sorry for her in the end of the book.… (more)
