Pretty accurate to the first season. Just not my favorite book. The show was better.

Dexter is a teenager when his need to kill comes to light, but he doesn’t know why he has the need. Dexter knows he’s different than most people – a lack of human emotion has seen to that. He doesn’t want to disappoint his straight and narrow policeman step-father. “Even then I knew; needing to kill something every now and then would pretty much sooner or later get in the way of being squared away.”

But Harry thinks he understands Dexter and his need. “He taught me to be careful as only a cop could tech a killer.” And Dexter is of course a killer. But then another killer comes to town and leaves magnificent tableaus that leave Dexter breathless. So now he has to find out who it is. In the process, Dexter discovers why he is an emotionless killer. It’s in the family history.

You can’t help comparing the television Dexter to Dexter on the page. In the book he’s even smarter, “A marvelously intelligent creature,” more twisted, and much funnier.

If you've seen the show you pretty much know what to expect here. It's almost a mystery but without enough foreshadowing or clues to really draw you into the plot.

Diffidently NOT for the squeamish
It's not easy being a serial killer, especially when you absolutely hate blood even though your job is in a crime lab in a police department doing blood analysis. But, hey... somebody has to do it, and these are all folks that absolutely deserved to die...so he's just "helping them out". If you watched the TV show... (and of course I did), I think I even have a few seasons on DVD...then you will feel right at home with the Dexter books. He's been described as a "killer with a conscience"...and it's been said that "It takes a monster to catch a monster." There are 7 of these books and each one will take you back and seat you in front of your TV. You might want to skip the refreshments. If you have a really dark and twisted sense of humor, and like reading about rather dark and twisted vigilantes, then you definitely need to spend some time and make friends with Dexter Morgan. Note: The author, Jeff Lindsay, reads the books on audio.… (more)
