About the Author
Joe R. Lansdale was born in Gladewater, Tex. in 1951. He attended Tyler Junior College, the University of Texas at Austin, and Stephen F. Austin State University. Lansdale has also had a varied career, having worked as a bouncer, a bodyguard, a transportation manager, a custodian, and a karate show more instructor before becoming a fulltime writer in 1981. Lansdale's written work includes several novels and more than 200 short stories. Although his favorite genre is fantasy, with suspense a close second, he has also written mysteries, horror, science fiction, and westerns. Some titles include Rumble Tumble, Dead in the West, The Nightrunners, Cold in July, By Bizarre Hands and The Drive-in (a 'B' Movie with Blood and Popcorn. Made in Texas) . In addition, Lansdale has edited the short-story anthologies Best of the West, The New Frontier: Best of the West 2, and Razored Saddles. Lansdale has received five Bram Stoker Awards from the Horror Writers of America, including one for "The Night They Missed the Horror Show." I chose this book for its cover and title and it didn't let me down albeit the puppy part is heartbreaking. I have never read anything by Lansdale before and now I have yet another series to sink my teeth into. At times the banter gets a bit wearying but I did keep laughing until the end. Listened to this on audio and I have to give the narrator credit for greatly adding to my enjoyment. So, a double header for me this weekend. Another series, another state, another bunch of characters I have a liking for and writing that actually hooks me along.… (more)
As per usual with a DNF, I'm not rating this one.
And, I have to be honest, I'm shocked that I'm DNFing a Lansdale book, as he's easily in my top ten authors. But this collection of 19 crime stories—that should have been an easy slamdunk, rip-through-it-in-a-day-or-two read—turned into a month-long effort of avoidance.
I'm not a prude, I'm truly not. I'll take sex scenes, I'll take extreme violence, hell, I'll even take the silly as long as it all serves the story. But this collection...well, okay, the fourteen stories I got through...seemed to have far too much sex for sex's sake. The violence quotient seemed about right for a Lansdale story, so that was okay. But the bear? More ridiculously terrible than silly.
But the biggest issue was, of the fourteen stories I read, I might have actually enjoyed two of them. None left a really positive lasting impression.
Honestly, I'm disappointed as hell, as I always look forward to reading Lansdale. Always.

Hap & Leonard Ride Again - Bibliomysteries #33
Review of the Mysterious Press/Open Road eBook (August 1, 2017) of the Mysterious Press hardcover & paperback (December 20, 2016).
This was my first Hap and Leonard story, from a series which GR friend Berengaria has regularly enthused about. In the chronology it takes place after book #9 Honky Tonk Samurai (2015) in which a detective agency has been formed led by Hap's girlfriend Brett.
The story doesn't adhere to the announced theme of "deadly books" in the Bibliomysteries series. Instead, the Texas duo have a run-in with a deadly bookmobile in which a container of several dead bodies is discovered. One of the bodies is that of Hoodoo Harry, the nickname of the bookmobile driver who went missing along with her vehicle 15 years ago. Our heroes decide to investigate the original disappearance and the reason for the many unreported deaths. What they discover is an unimaginable horror.
This was a great introduction to the Hap and Leonard series and didn't require you to know very much about the backstory of the characters. The downhome banter and camaraderie was somewhat reminiscent of the best of John Sandford's Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers, esp. with the latter's penchant for taking off on fishing expeditions. I hope to read more of them in the future.

Lots of pop culture inspired stories, from the blues man Robert Johnson, to Huckleberry Finn and Joe and the characters from Uncle Remus’ stories, to Edgar Allan Poe’s Auguste Dupin with Frankenstein and the ancestor of the creator of Grimm’s Fairy Tales! And I believe that Amelia Earhart appears in two separate stories, though unnamed in both!
“The Crawling Sky” is a Reverend Mercer story, one of my favorite Lansdale characters. And it’s a good ‘un!
Overall, a good collection to read around the Halloween holiday!
