The New International Commentary on the New Testament (NICNT) is based on careful study of the Greek text and reflects serious work in technical areas -- such as linguistics, textual criticism and historical concerns. The NICNT series flourished under the editorship of several New Testament scholars -- first Ned Stonehouse (Westminster Theological Seminary), then F. F. Bruce (University of Manchester, England) and Gordon D. Fee (Regent College, Canada) and now Joel B. Green (Fuller Theological Seminary). This is volume one of a two volume commentary in the Word Biblical Commentary set. This is an excellent commentary, which, although it may be beyond one's educational experience (as it is mine), it is not beyond one's ability to understand and grasp the full scope of Lane's meaning; and, it is an exciting and profitable read! See also my review on Lane's smaller commentary on Hebrews, 'A Call to Commitment.'

This is an exceptional commentary; short but with much more said in this short commentary than in many commentaries of either multiple volumes or 1 volume with greater number of pages. This commentary reads like a Ted Dekker novel; if you put it down after beginning to read it, I assure you, it will be most likely against your will. It is an easy read with profound, theologically practical insights. Lane's sees Hebrews as primarily a sermon, an example of "early Christian preaching" with concern for "Christians wrestling with the cost of commitment".… (more)
