This is a good description of this book, save that whether it is "page-turning" will depend on what turns you on.

It is very much more focussed on the people involved in these endeavours, including what in their backgrounds led them down particular avenues of thought and their personal interactions with their collaborators and competitors, rather on pages of technical mathematical formulae which underpins these developments.

In that regard, it provides good lay person descriptions of the different developments (which are still going on), without talking down to the readers.

If this sounds like it might be of interest as a way into this area of science, give it a go.
