Carolyn Hart's Newest: Disappointing in Cozy Mysteries (November 2008)

Annie and Max get drawn into the Ladson family drama when Max's mother, Laurel is being scammed by a psychic who is also trying to scam the retired actress, Marguerite Dumaney Ladson, money holder of her family. The connection to the family is deepened by the fact that Annie's long lost father, Pudge, is ex-husband of the actress's sister, the murder victim. This actual murder mystery was OK but a clique in plot. The side story dealing with Annie's relationship to her father and step-sister was the more interesting part of the story that kept me reading.… (more)

Annie Laurence has inherited her Uncle’s bookstore, Death on Demand, on Broward’s Rock Island. She has instituted a Sunday Night Regulars gathering of local mystery writers which has just hit a snag. One of the authors has decided to write an expose on his fellow writers and is going to use the next meeting to tell the group what he has found out about them. But as he begins his talk the lights go out and when they come back he has been shot with a poison dart. Of course, all are suspects and the police focus on Annie. Wealthy boyfriend, Max and her decide to uncover the real killer. Great story for mystery buffs with lots of references to books and authors. Interested in continuing with this series.… (more)

A fun read. Simple mystery set in a fictional Oklahoma town. The plot centers around an oil rich family who are doing a death watch over the patriarch of the family when a murder occurs at their mansion. Bailey Ruth (the ghost) is sent to perform some interventions on earth and solves the crimes. (A second murder is also part of the story as is a budding romance.). Easy, fast read.

Like an April Fool’s Day prank that falls flat, this was underwhelming.
