This is a very different WWII story, with roots in the Great War, and being swept up in fascism, and the affects it has on a family in Great Britten.
The author gives us a lot in a story, and as we delve deeper into the book, answers do come along with some great surprises.
We are given some sweet romance, along with the horrible bombing in the streets of London, and the compassion of helping those less fortunate. This is also a dual time read, 2020 back to 1938, although most of this takes place in the late 30's.
The author does a wonderful job of bringing a look at life of a family during WWII!
I received this book through Net Galley and Storm Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review

Benny Goldman arrives in England at 11 as part of the Kinder-transport of Jewish German children in 1939. He and 5 other boys are selected by Lord and Lady Dornton to live at their manor, Fairfleet, and be educated and prepared for a future. Rosamunde Hunter, granddaughter of Lady Dornton, is a hospice nurse, called in to care for Benny when he is dying of cancer. Benny had purchased Fairfleet after the Dornton's sold it. Rosamunde has painful memories of Fairfleet where her mother died when Rosamunde was 13. During the last days of Benny's life, these 2 people with secrets come to be friends and reveal their secrets.

The book jumps between Benny's early years in Germany and England, Rosamunde's at Fairfleet, and the present. I found Benny's early years the most interesting. Rosamunde's early story seemed more fabricated to create a 'secret'; seemed to have holes and be less believable. But still a good story of forgiveness and redemption.

The “Midwife’s Promise” is a story of a grandmother's decision to raise her grandson as her own after Germany takes control of Lyon, France. Sophie Hansen takes her calling of being a midwife very seriously despite the risk of detainment by German soldiers. As the war continues, Sophie is asked to help children escape German controlled France since the convent is no longer safe. Sophie’s Daughter, Camille chooses to remain in Lyon after marrying Jean-Luc, a successful business man despite Germany’s presence. Camille becomes pregnant and asks her mother to return to Lyon after sensing something is not right. Sophie’s return sparks a chain reaction leading to Camille and her in-laws fleeing Lyon for safety.

Eliza Grahams takes readers to Germany’s occupation of France where fear runs rampant. Eliza’s character of Sophie and Camille encompasses a loving mother and daughter’s relationship when Sophie returns to help Camilla deliver her babies. Eliza convey’s the frustration Camilla feels when she isn’t able to embrace her mother when she responds to her daughters call for help. Sophie is referred to a midwife to keep her true identity hidden as one who helps Jewish children escape to freedom. I am a fan of historical fiction and enjoyed this book very much.

5 stars, Comfort Amid Atrocities

THE MIDWIFE'S PROMISE
by Eliza Graham

In a dual timeline, Sophie tells us her story, from WWII in France, and from 1992. She is a midwife and does all she can to help the mothers and babies in her care. It isn't always easy, sometimes it is just plain hard to do. She helps anyone she comes across, at great risk to herself.

Highly recommend. Promises and secrets, both go hand in hand.

I received a complimentary copy of #TheMidwifesPromise from #StormPublishing and #NetGalley I was not obligated to post a review.
