April is a wonderful fat main character!! I don’t think I’ve ever read a romance that celebrates self-love while addressing the trauma that comes with being a fat woman while ALSO having delightful fanfiction and fandom references all the live long day!

There is so much love and honesty and communication and drama and rated E (for explicit, not for everyone!) content wrapped up in a niche interest I instantly devoured. April is smart and sexy and Marcus is layered and also sexy and I mean, what’s not to love here?… (more)

C+ (Okay).

TV costars wait to date until after their show is over.

I probably would have liked this more if I hadn't read the other two books in the series. Knowing what the eventual formula for the story would be (that these characters who were building a loving friendship over the course of years were eventually going to be dicks to each other) put a dark cloud over everything.

When Athena’s fiancé breaks up with her a month before their wedding, Athena has already quit her teaching job, broken her lease and spent her savings buying a property in her ex’s hometown. So she moves into her newly purchased spite house while she figures out what to do next. She knows she’s likely to run into her ex. She is not expecting to find herself living next-door to his older brother, who Athena partially blames for the break-up.

Often I have preferred single point-of-view romances but this definitely benefited from being dual POV. Because Matthew holds a different view of Athena to what she assumes, and because his relationship with his brother is complicated by the way Matthew, despite being only eight years older, practically brought Johnny up and is still supporting him financially.

I wasn’t always amused by Athena’s attempts to get revenge by annoying Matthew, but I was certainly invested in Athena’s struggles with her mental health. Dade centres that struggle, allowing Athena sufficient space to work through it, and Matthew is very supportive. That was very satisfying.

It all sounded so sensible when he explained it. So inarguable.
Somehow, though, her brain
did keep arguing. It told her he didn’t truly understand. It insisted if he knew her better, he would think as little of her as she thought of herself.
“If your personal history belonged to a friend, and they sat down and cried to you about it, we both know you wouldn’t think, ‘Wow, what a failure. What a waste her existence has been.’ So why can’t you be that kind to yourself?” He jostled her a bit in his arms, emphasizing his point. “Why do you have to be perfect, Athena? Why can’t you make mistakes, or take a few detours as you figure out where you want to go?”

Sweet midlife romance with two main characters who have to work on themselves before they can accept love. I enjoy these stories with more mature characters, their life experiences make them more layered and give them a nice amount of depth. Although her stories don't always resonate with me as much as this one did, Olivia Dade does a great job writing strong women. Loved Rose and Martin!
