R.J.A. Gilbert has won awards for bringing unique perspectives and abstract insight to his writing. Never one to “color within the lines”, his works reflect worlds where myth and history blend seamlessly—where heroes of legend battle antediluvian monsters, where dragons chase flying cars across the skies, and where unexpected twists can occur on any page.

When not plotting his next literary adventure, Gilbert lives a quiet life with his family in the Pacific Northwest.

I actually wrote a book about a mystery in my own life, but because it was about my own life, I had to use a pen name.

Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to disclose that pen name or the nature of that mystery.

Romance books always start at the beginning of the relationship, and the story usually leaves off with the couple only a year or two—at best—into a relationship we all hope will last until death parts them.

In his book, Illusion, Frank Peretti created a very different kind of romance when he started it at the end. Mandy is dead on page one, and we join Dane in what he thinks is the finale of a wonderful, long-term relationship. Then, as the story progresses, we get a taste of all the wonderful years of romance they shared between their first, amorous meeting and the final, tragic parting. Of course, as the plot unfolds, the reader is left hoping that their relationship is not really over after all.

Peretti based this story on his own long-term marriage and his own appreciation for his wife through the years. That being said, Illusion is the kind of story that makes you want what they have—not those first few days of romance, but all the years to come.

On the looting--and finding--of national treasures.

I don’t need to gaze into a crystal ball to see that the current period of unrest is going to result in looted museums and lost pieces of artwork, jewelry, and other historical relics. History itself gives enough clues to predict that it would happen. In fact, it seems, a running theme in much of my writing is the loss of national treasures during times of political unrest and instability. Oh, if

“Just because you are a child of God, that doesn’t mean you can act like a child."
~Renaud”
Robert J.A. Gilbert, The Lucky and the Strong

“A hero is not measured by the lives that he has saved. A hero is measured by the number of the dead that he did not join.”
Robert J.A. Gilbert, Men of Renown

“A sword is only as good, or as evil, as its user. In good hands it defends the helpless and brings justice. In evil hands it leaves a swath of despair and suffering. The same goes for...laws--or anything, for that matter. Either good men use them for good, or evil men use them for evil, but they are not inherently good or evil in themselves."

“There are three classes of people: those who see. Those who see when they are shown. Those who do not see.”
Leonardo da Vinci

“Stories which have failed either to become popular folk lore or to be embalmed in old newspaper files are in great danger of oblivion. If they are saved, often it is by the merest chance. And that chance may well depend upon one individual with a treasure-story bent and a retentive memory.”
Ruby Elhult, Lost Mines and Treasures of the Pacific Northwest
