Hi there, Sarah!
Houston is located about 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico--Galveston being the primary port. I was born and raised in Houston, and even attended the University of Houston. Grew up in the tumultuous years of the oil boom, recessions and the industrial shifts (where oil and refineries were the primary employers), while attending awesome games at the Astrodome and taking summer trips to the beach. If you like weekend road trips, driving three hours southwest will lead you to Corpus Christi and Port Aransas, which are summertime faves for my family. Texas is definitely home sweet home!

My Heart and Soul series actually begins in Austin, TX (where I currently reside), and then makes a shift to the Blue Ridge Mountains...and ultimately into the dense Boreal Forest of Northern Canada.

I've researched it extensively for some of my books, and have fallen in love with the stately trees! Love the trees and the mystical qualities they bring to any setting. But, honestly, the book world of Alice in Wonderland would definitely be awesome--a trip to remember, I'm sure.(less)

Thinking of everyone

I just wanted to send out a warm hello and a note of prayer for the Goodreads family to be healthy and safe as we implement social distancing. Most of us are readers and writers, and I'm definitely finding both modalities helpful as a means to distract myself from news saturation. I'm also gently nudging people to try to reconnect to their personal passions or interests as we navigate this forced Read more of this blog post »

“I need to say something. Take it anyway you like,” Ian stated, his eyes boring into hers with a fervor that left her holding her breath.

Elaine started to shake her head. “Look, we just met…you don’t need to say…”

His deep, cultured voice interrupted her. “Everything you are, Laney, resides in your eyes. I need to see you—all of you. Don’t take that from me while I’m still here. Please.”

Tears welled. “You don’t even know me,” she whispered. “How can you say that?”

“Because I think I do know you—I just haven’t figured out how.”
R. W. Patterson, Solace From Shadows

“You don’t have a monopoly on pain or loss. It’s a level playing field—we all lose—we all grieve. It’s what remains afterwards that defines us. Guilt is the poison we pump into our own veins. It’s self-inflicted torture.”
R. W. Patterson, Light and Shadows, Book 2

“Grief—in all of its agony—burrowed deep into her essence, its serrated edges killing her piece by piece.”
R. W. Patterson, Dark Night of the Soul: A sacrifice to end a life; A rescue to save a soul.

R. W. Patterson, Solace From Shadows

“I’ve come to understand that each person has to work out their own personal algorithm of courage. No two are the same, and it’s no used trying to borrow or copy anyone else’s.”
J.R. Thornton, Beautiful Country

“I want you, Elaine. I want your mind, your soul, your body. I want you as my mate. I offer you my soul—right now. Right here. Take it all—take everything I am,” he murmured, his lips grazing the corner of her mouth. “…and I’ll even let you keep your clothes on.”
She looked up at him, gasping at his boldness. In that instance, Ian’s lips slanted across hers in a consuming, mind-numbing, heart-stopping kiss. She moaned against his mouth, drinking in his groan before pulling back, chest heaving. “We’re in church, Ian,” she panted. “God can hear us.”
His lips curled into a small, knowing smile. “I’m counting on that, love.”
R. W. Patterson, Light and Shadows, Book 2

“Fire and ice licked at his soul—whispered his name—drawing him deeper into the enveloping pain and blackness as he’d dreamed earlier. He suddenly wished to return to the rippling stream. The water would wash away the blistering pain…the fire…the burn. He’d wade deeper…submit to the current…
He’d let go…”
R. W. Patterson, Light and Shadows, Book 2

“Yes, the monsters were real. Are real. There are creatures in this world that exist beyond the scope of what you know and see. Remember, not all are created equal. Some are better…and worse than others…just like humans.”
R. W. Patterson, Light and Shadows, Book 2
