Nancy O’Toole is an author of superhero fiction and fairy tale retellings. Her body of work includes The Red and Black Series, and The Twin Kingdoms series. She is the co-host of One for All: A My Hero Academia Podcast. When not writing, or working as a librarian in Central Maine, she spends her time reading, playing video games, watching kdramas, and taking far too many pictures of her cat, Coraline.

It makes sense that Amazon is usually at the center of the self-publishing conversation. Before the arrival of KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing), indie publishing was the realm of vanity presses: spending large chunks of money for a print run of a single book. The arrival of KDP revolutionized self-publishing, opening the door for countless new voices to be heard. If it wasn’t for KDP, my writing car

“The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis.' One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger--but recognize the opportunity.”
John F. Kennedy

Joshua Foer
“Monotony collapses time; novelty unfolds it. You can exercise daily and eat healthily and live a long life, while experiencing a short one. If you spend your life sitting in a cubicle and passing papers, one day is bound to blend unmemorably into the next - and disappear. That's why it's so important to change routines regularly, and take vacations to exotic locales, and have as many new experiences as possible that can serve to anchor our memories. Creating new memories stretches out psychological time, and lengthens our perception of our lives.”
Joshua Foer, Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything

John Green
“Imagining the future is a kind of nostalgia. (...) You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.”
John Green, Looking for Alaska

“The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.”
John Green, Looking for Alaska

Walter Cronkite
“Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”
Walter Cronkite

Crowinator You're welcome. It was a great review. I especially liked your point about September being a regular girl and how that changed the standard "mythical hero" fantasy tropes.

Nancy O'Toole Yes. I have read them all, but to be honest it's been a while. I went through a huge manga phase while going for my undergrad. Since then, I haven't read all that much of it. If you're looking for any opinions, I'll do my best :)

Rachael I just discovered your manga shelf. Have you read all the books on that list, or are some to-read? I don't read too much manga because I hate searching for them in my library, but I do occasionally pick some up. I watch Korean & Japanese dramas though, so searching for the manga version of those led me to your shelf.
