I do get the notion of 'authenticity' though - as a queer teen I sought out books by gay men in order to, I guess, learn from the feet of those who had gone before me. But those weren't romances, really. Yet I also devoured Anne Rice's books and swooned over the tortured love of Louis and Lestat.

What I do think, however, is that when you're writing about a minority, you must show respect for them and be careful not to misappropriate. Allies must have a care not to become the spokespeople, and sometimes I think that gets shafted in the MM genre, when any time an LGBTQ person has a criticism to make they often get shouted down. It can be very discouraging and disheartening.

So a longwinded response to a very complex question - ANYONE can, and should, write MM - but please remember you're writing about a disenfranchised minority and not make the characters cardboard fetishes.

And also, I'm just one voice. You could find any other LGBTQ person writing in the genre who would very possibly think I'm being an opinionated arsehole ;)(less)

“So what are you going to wear?”
I looked at her, wondering if she thought I had suddenly grown a vagina in the past five minutes. “Clothes.”
Sean Kennedy, Tigers and Devils

“When single you are,” Roger said, imitating Yoda dispensing advice to Luke, “get laid you can. When married you get, make love you do.”
Sean Kennedy, Tigers and Devils

“I would never have broken up with you," I said earnestly. "I'm more miserable without you than I am with you." As soon as that sentence came out I groaned, because I knew how bad it sounded.
But Declan laughed. "Vintage Simon Murray comment.”

“...this woman, moved by some private sorrow as much as the words being spoken, cried almost silently, unobserved by others, apart from Mma Ramotswe, who stretched out her hand and laid it on her shoulder. Do not cry, Mma, she began to whisper, but changed her words even as she uttered them, and said quietly, Yes, you can cry, Mma. We should not tell people not to weep - we do it because of our sympathy for them - but we should really tell them that their tears are justified and entirely right.”
Alexander McCall Smith, The Double Comfort Safari Club

Nic Thanks for the friendship Sean. It's great having another GR friend in the same timezone (well sort of as I'm assuming you are in Perth?)

Hi, Susan! So glad you liked the book. My other novels are a bit different to TaD, but most people seem to like Dash and Dingo the best after it.

Sean Kennedy I'm pretty sure if Twitter is a recognised word now, so must be friending!

Fuck I miss Melbourne. Unfortunately I moved back to Perth to be with family after getting sick but spent eight glorious years there. It must be in the blood though, because I was born there. Long family story!

Are you north or south of the river?
