While downtown the town is very touristy and safe, we lived in a neighborhood with drug dealers and prostitutes and it wasn't uncommon to hear gunfire throughout the day. I wasn't working (this is when I started writing novels) and I knew exactly where to stand if anyone ever showed up at my door with a gun. I always thought that could make for an intriguing start to a story...(less)

Because I never say where these books take place, I looked at laws in several states and took averages. For underage drinking & driving, some take away a license for a month or two, others for a year, so I split it down the middle. A lot offer community service in lieu of jail time.

Plus one of my early readers is a lawyer so she tells me if something's off.(less)

“I figure the more people think I'm just mildly weird, the less likely they are to know how weird I really am.”
Melanie Hooyenga, Flicker

“I roll my eyes and the girl I’m talking to tilts her head. “Sorry, not you. I’m being stupid in my head.”
Melanie Hooyenga, The Slope Rules

“Our experiences make us who we are. Good, bad... each thing that happens to us builds upon the last thing, forming the way we think, how we react, and ultimately, who we become.”
Melanie Hooyenga, The Slope Rules

“Thinking about history makes me wonder how I’ll fit into it one day, I guess. And you too. I kinda wish people still wrote like that. History, huh? Bet we could make some.”
Casey McQuiston, Red, White & Royal Blue

“That's the choice. I love him, with all that, because of all that. On purpose. I love him on purpose.”
