Award-winning author Nita Sweeney writes about wellness and consciousness. After a decade of legal practice (and a major depressive episode), Nita turned in her shingle for a fast-writing pen. People still ask legal questions, but she's done her best to forget the answers. Instead of negotiating labor contracts for public agencies, she writes, and shares what she's learned.

Nita's articles, essays, and poems have appeared in Buddhist America, Dog World, Dog Fancy, Writer’s Journal, Country Living, Pitkin Review, Spring Street, WNBA-SF blog, Pencil Storm, It's Not Your Journey, and in several newspapers and newsletters. She blogs and publishes the monthly email, Write Now Columbus

He fell on hard times soon after and my parents allowed him to move in with us. He lived on our sofa for several years. He continued to be a family friend, farming partner, and general helper around our farm. He was a bit of a scoundrel, often unkind and even mean. He could be charming and funny, but also cruel. The mystery is why they let him move in and stay for so long? And what prompted them to stay friends with him. He became like family. Meanwhile, he rarely saw is "real" family, nine children who lived just up the road. The answer died with my parents, but the questions linger.(less)

The sanctuary between hope and despair

My watch said 2am. As I lay alone in the narrow retreat center bed—heart pounding and chest aching—hope vanished and my thoughts descended into despair. Was I going into cardiac […]

Quotes by Nita Sweeney  (?)

“If running taught me anything, it was how to turn things around. So many times, I had dreaded a workout, only for it to turn out splendid. So many days I had been convinced I would get lost. only to be thrilled by new scenery as I found my way. So many mornings I growled about rising at the butt-crack of dawn, then wound up laughing with my friends. This was no different. The doldrums wouldn’t last, especially if I took action.”
Nita Sweeney, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running With My Dog Brought Me Back From the Brink

“What changes your life is the day-to-day stuff leading up to and following the events.”
Nita Sweeney, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running With My Dog Brought Me Back From the Brink

“We only talked for a minute, but this reminded me I was loved.”
