I don’t think I’m morbid, but there is a fascination in the small, unthought-of details that go into how to handle a disaster and its long aftermath, and at the same time a deep and constant concern for the well-being of the survivors and bereaved.

Those details are often brutal, often surprising: rain that makes a soup of mud and fuel and blood; the violent stench of shit and smells that put the author ‘off mushrooms for life’; booking motels for responders far from the grieving; hiring a hawk to stop pigeons making off with bits of dead people. The cool observation that ‘the top-heavy head on the frame of a bi-ped is ripe for decapitation.’

Inevitably, there is conflict with political or financial interests: the Chinese denying the existence of those who chose, fatally, to flee; the British government seeking ‘friendly coroners’ for those killed in Iraq, sent to war without the necessary boots. There are the responders made to pay for giving survivors tea and biscuits. And what can be more scandalous that insurance companies insisting that treasured, salvaged possession go into a skip, or cutting up furniture under threat of fraud?

In all of this, Easthope is driven to restore dignity to the dead and ensure respect for those left behind. As a former journalist, I was struck by the distress caused by assurances discovered to be false, leading to the distrust of all official statements as a result.

If I have a criticism of the book it is that it falls between two stools, a hard-hitting factual account of a necessary but forgotten area of scientific and social policy, and a misery memoir.

I would have liked on the one hand a summary of procedures in one of those disaster planning documents, and at least the gist of that message that comforted passengers and crew after an air disaster.

Easthope was unluckily close to several major incidents in private life, Alton Towers in particular, and it’s understandable that this and her professional experiences should affect her home life and be included in the book. Her reaction to handling a toothbrush or pen of a brand recovered from wreckage touched a nerve.

But I did not feel this was the place to talk about her miscarriages or husband’s illness, tragic though they were.

As an editor, I had to direct coverage of disasters a few times, including Hillsborough. I’m not sure we always got it right. There is a convention that UK media do not publish pictures of dead bodies despite what is sometimes depicted on TV (war is slightly different), and we had to decide whether to print what became a well-known image of people crushed against a barrier. Probably the girl at the front was already dead but clearly there was an urgent case demanding an enquiry. Thus most of the nationals published it, we used a different picture. Probably wrongly.

Closer to home there was the Lyme Bay canoeing disaster in which four teenagers from Plymouth died. At the Western Morning News we formed a relationship with the parents to act as their voice to other media. Later they spoke at an editors’ conference about how, before they were fully aware of what had happened, they turned into their street to see an unexpected barrage of newspaper photographers and TV cameramen outside their home.

I hope that through the efforts of people like Lucy Easthope that relatives are better prepared to face the aftermath of disasters now. ...more

And as a representation of everyday life in a squat, and of the anarcho/revolutionary goings-on of its inhabitants, it seems an accurate account of a lifestyle most of Lessing’s readers will never know. There was something quite addictive too in following the efforts of young surrogate super-mum Alice in raising the condition of the house from shit-filled squalor to something approaching decency.
Events come to a climax, due in part to the self-destructive urges of one of the communards, and I could even just about believe in Alice’s dependent love for the worthless, homosexual layabout Jasper.
Those aspects apart, however, this tedious novel’s virtues are far outweighed by its weaknesses. Characters are physically described but lack psychological substance, political opinions are forthright without their origins explained. I really could not accept that Alice’s loathing of the middle class, the vile abuse she heaps on her father and mother, and her enthusiasm to destroy the world was caused by having an undemonstrative mum and having to share her parents’ bedroom after their parties.
While life inside the conspirators’ ghetto is believable, Alice’s view of the outside world is so uniformly hostile as to undermine the balance of the story. A policeman has “a vicious face … the psychopath”; a Greek restaurateur is “a nasty piece of work”; when a civil servant has to make a decision “the official and the human being fought inside her”.
Not all of this can be excused as the character’s own view. It’s Lessing who has Alice’s father fire an employee wrongly accused of theft because he’s black.
There are some logical improbabilities in the narrative too. Philip is too frail to keep a job as a builder yet at 25 it seems he is a capable roof tiler, electrician, plumber, plasterer and painter. (Where do I find such a man?) The procedures of the electricity company and borough council are unconvincing. And we are told that half-way through grammar school Jasper’s father was made bankrupt and so he received a scholarship. Since when did grammar schools charge fees? And then there are the spooks - Russian and MI5 - who just turn up at the door, and to whom the otherwise perceptive Alice blurts about 'materiel.'
But above all, the central section of the book is dull and tedious because the dialogue - as in The Sirian Experiments - is stilted, and the writing pedestrian. Someone makes a vegetable stew. “It was very nice and they enjoyed it.” How could a professional novelist, and a Nobel Prize winner too, pen a line like that? ...more

Barnes has meticulously researched the actual case of George Edalji, son of the Vicar of Great Wyrley, a Parsee convert to Christianity. In 1903 he was wrongly convicted, due to police and judicial incompetence, of mutilating beasts and threatening a constable, and sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
The case comes to Doyle’s notice, and with characteristic zeal, he throws himself into disproving the allegations, as a result of which Edalji is released but never officially declared innocent or compensated.
It’s a gripping story, and a significant one, for the scandal led indirectly to the setting up of the Court of Appeal, there having previously been no appeal from the decision of often untrained magistrates, except by petition to the Home Secretary – who had better things to consider.
Edalji is a true unsung hero, whose sorrow at being incarcerated is because of the distress and humiliation inflicted on his family, and who bears his imprisonment with stoicism, and without losing his belief in British justice. His dream is to return to being a quietly competent solicitor, which he achieves. His pride later is in having contributed to a change in the judicial system, a role he is too modest to advertise.
This being a story closely based on real events, it lacks the final punch of a true pot-boiler. The author of the letters is revealed – not by Doyle or Edalji – but in an author’s note, and the motive remains unknown. Nor is the identity of the main criminal, responsible for senseless attacks on animals, even uncovered.
The writing is direct, immediate if at times too filled with the details of the writer’s research – the details for example of the going away dress of Doyle’s second wife Jean, from one of those wedding reports that junior reporters compiled for decades.
Barnes gives just the right amount of space to Sir Arthur’s spiritualism, starting with the boy’s early sight of the body of his grandmother and the speculations to which it gave rise about ‘a grandchild who, by the acquisition of memory, had just stopped being a thing, and a grandmother who, by losing those attributes the child was developing, had returned to that state.’
There is brief reference to the hostility that his views on the afterlife gave rise, but Doyle is allowed a decent if specious argument for spiritualism. He is, nevertheless, put in his place by his sceptical sister Connie, after he tells her of a psychic who apparently predicted the finding of a body in the sea off Melbourne.
‘What do you make of that?’ he asks. What she makes of it is that her brother is confusing religion with his love of fixing things. And that it is ‘a wonderful story, and you are a wonderful storyteller.’
It’s a typical example of the clever way in which Barnes defines character through the observation of others. At one point Arthur claims the testing of his and Jean’s love has been unique, to which his sensible wife, loyal and tolerant of his spiritualism without adherence, replies, ‘Does not every couple think their case unique?’
A sentence, a well-chosen detail is often enough to define personality – Arthur’s mother, for example who does not quite approve of his abandonment of a carriage for a motor car because ‘you can’t put a family crest on a machine.’ Or his assistant Wood, who ‘always had a deal of sympathy for the character of Dr Watson,’ and gives the obvious answers to questions when the over-elaborating Doyle is trying to eliminate them.
Every man has his weakness, and Doyle’s seems to have been his attitude toward women, whom he believed should not only continue to be denied the vote, but also banned from the golf course, because their presence put men off their game. That apart, he emerges however as vividly, powerfully and sympathetically as one could hope of a revered figure reappearing from the past, as he deeply believed he was fated to do.
There is a curious postscript to the story contained in letters, unknown to Barnes, that came up for auction ten years after the novel’s publication. They show that the Staffordshire Chief Constable George Anson, responsible for Edalji’s prosecution and who resented Doyle playing the detective, trying to put him off the scent by sending him anonymous, threatening letters. The narrator Lucy is 63, who agrees to travel with her ex-husband William on a journey from New York to Maine to look up his newly-discovered half-sister, whom his mother abandoned as a baby.
It’s an emotional time for both Lucy and William: the former’s second husband has recently died, and his third wife has just left him. But their journey together is not a renewal of their former marriage, but rather a process of discovery about each other, their past relationship and troubled childhoods, that slowly emerges from their conversations.
There’s an odd feeling of disparity as Lucy frequently refers back to previous novels in which she has written about her family yet speaks in a conversational style as if this were an intimate chat, with the repetitions and hesitations of ordinary speech, and not a novel at all.
Yet this works beautifully, and told with an appealing generosity of spirit, that gradually uncovers layers of both their personalities.
Strout, like her writer protagonist, has indeed written earlier novels about these characters, but I did not feel I needed to have read them (I hadn’t) to enjoy this one. I cannot do better than to quote this from a Guardian review:
‘The miraculous quality of Strout’s fiction is the way she opens up depths with the simplest of touches, and this novel ends with the assurance that the source of love lies less in understanding than in recognition – although it may take a lifetime to learn the difference.’

There is another ending, a personal one for me. Just over five years ago, I set out to read every novel short-listed for the Booker Prize since its launch in 1968, starting with P.H. Newby’s Something to Answer For. Apart from the unreadable Ducks, Newburyport, I’ve now read them all and reviewed most on Goodreads.
Thank you, Booker. But clearly the judges, usually writers or academics, are often more impressed by innovative writing styles than readability, and it was good to finish with this accessible, popular and affectionate book.

The story begins in 1986 when the family gather at a farm outside Pretoria for the funeral of Ma, Rachel Swart. There are tensions in the air, because she has reverted to her Jewish faith, to the aggravation particularly of her Afrikaaner in-laws, Marina and her husband Ockie.
But of longer lasting significance is Ma’s promise, made two years earlier and witnessed by daughter Amor and others, to bequest to their black servant Salome the small house she occupies on the family property.
Apartheid ends, Mandela becomes President, but down on the farm prejudice, greed, and religious self-serving continue unabated as each inheritor finds reasons to ignore Rachel’s wishes. And if they were granted, how would her gesture be regarded?
Galgut paints in many colours, introducing a rich range of characters, down to bit-players with their individual idiosyncrasies, as varied in personality as the farm itself, a mishmash of styles ‘like a drunk wearing odd bits of clothing.’
He writes a wonderful paragraph describing the family asleep after the funeral, Manie dreams of his departed wife Rachel, their daughter of the boy who has just taken her virginity, Marina of P.W. Botha feeding her strawberries with thick, white fingers, Ockie of nothing much then farts.
This serious, moral tale has many such moments of humour, often generated by Galgut’s appealing, sardonic style which allows him to comment wryly, even on his own literary inventions. As when son Anton finds his way through long hospital corridors ‘like a little germ through miles of intestinal passages.’ ‘What an image,’ he then writes, ‘but in its way appropriate, given the setting.’ A self-congratulatory pat-on-the back, maybe, but amusing.
Elsewhere, the book is illuminated by irony, the more effective for its restraint. Some of the writer’s most withering remarks are aimed at that upholder of righteousness and reaction, the Reformed (or unreformed) church. Its self-appointed pastor, the loathsome Alwyn Simmers wishes that ‘the sons and daughters of Ham should be toiling on behalf of their masters and mistresses, hewing wood, drawing water, and generally make life liveable for those who bear the heavy yoke of leadership. A burden that some might prefer to decline.’
This splendid book, deftly narrated, justly winner of the 2021 Booker Prize, left me with a feeling that the sheep and the goats had been judged and divided, but not as the Rev. Simmers would have imagined. I enjoyed it immensely. ...more
