Chucked at 10%. I should have known better. How many times have I seen all those awards listed in a blurb and been suckered into trying a book?

I'm just not doing it. Maybe it gets better, but no. I'm not getting trapped into losing a couple of months of my life because I'm determined to finish a China Miéville/Gene Wolfe-type experience. Maybe I'm not smart enough to grasp this genre.

Or more likely, I just don't give a damn.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* I'm going with the latter...

Kaora Yes another person who couldn't get Perdido Street Station. I can't understand the hype.

Rachel the Book Harlot I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I couldn't make it past the sample.

Chris Haught Good to have company. Heh..

Becky LOL Glad to see you're making good use of that made-my-eyes-bleed shelf! :D

You inspired me! LOL

Leland uh oh, and I just bought this one too. Eeep.

Chris Haught You might like it. There was some potential. I might have given up too soon.

Blame China Mieville for that.

message 9: by Leland (new)

Leland Oh I dropped Perdido Street Station like it was a hot rock....I think I might have still been in chapter 1.

message 10: by Estelle (new)

Estelle Doing the same thing right now. I can't read this thing.
Good to see it's not just me!

Leland Chris wrote: "You might like it. There was some potential. "

I dunno. According to Goodreads "Compare Books" you and I agree about 84% of the time. :)

But I'll give it a shot. ;)

Tessa in Mid-Michigan Hate Mieville so far, but love this. No comparison.

Oh, not so much comparing the books as saying that I suffered through Perdido Street Station instead of giving up when I should have.

Though since I gave up on this, I've been wondering if I should try again.

Tessa in Mid-Michigan I finally finished it, and it was a slog. Not bad, but not as wonderful as touted.

Marc Thought it was me.. perservered 100 pages in. There is a good story buried in there I think.

Abby Goldsmith There are lots of good SFF novels, but don't look at award winners. Try indie authors. There's actual innovation going on there.

Twerking To Beethoven Ace review. I know where you're coming from, mate. I do.

Michael Henderson Thank God I'm not the only one who didn't like this. I bailed at about 20%.

C If it takes you months to read 400 pages maybe books aren't for you.

Congratulations. You are the winner of this year's Obtuse Award.

C I'll be sure to mention hobby critics in my acceptance speech.

I would think it only fair since they inspired you to take up the same hobby.

Uberlulz.

Jason I listened to the audiobook (I drive a lot for work). The narrator was terrible and the book was a mess. I gave up about 30 minutes in. I'm an avid sci-fi reader, but this book was poorly written, IMO.

message 26: by Mark (new)

Mark Chapman I finished it. It wasn't worth it.

Roddy Williams At least you finished it. I don't see how anyone can post a 'review' based on reading 10% of the book. Just forget it and move on.

message 28: by Anna (new) - rated it 1 star

Anna I finished it and I will never get that time back! I soldiered on bravely because all of the rave reviews and the nicest thing I can say is "meh."

message 29: by Karn (new) - rated it 1 star

Karn I agree wholeheartedly with the last sentence. I just couldn't get myself to care about this cold impersonal and somehow still confused character

Scott Marlowe Just finished it. Decent read but nothing special. You're not missing much by skipping it. I won't be reading the others in the series.

Lalit Ganwir Chris, I fully agree. Exotic concepts are good, but the writing and plot have to pull a reader in. This book alas does not do it. I stopped the moment I realized that the book was a chore and not a pleasure.

Laura (Kyahgirl) I've started this one three times! So many of my sci fi buddies love it that I keep thinking I must be the problem.

Lalit Ganwir I fully concur without review Chris. The concept is brilliant but it fails as the author misses the narrative pace.
