Wonderful book. I wasn't sure what to expect as I read this as a freebie from Amazon Prime.
Set in one of the German states during the mid 17th century, it centres on a lowly servent girl that as an orphan, has been sold at the age of thirteen to to a fairly wealthy old man who beats her and regularly sexually abuses her.
After he dies she gets a position as a house keeper for the local catholic priest. When he becomes to ill to continue preforming his roll he is replaced by a young dynamic man who has been sent to investigate a mysterious death of a young child.
The area is suffering one of the worst winters on record and the locals are finding it increasingly difficult to survive, so start turning on each other.
Set during the struggle with religious wars and witch hunts
The book gets darker as you read.
I truly didn't see the end coming which was really a big surprise.
